CINCINNATI— The University of Cincinnati men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams swept crosstown rival Xavier, in dominant fashion on Friday.

The Bearcats won 22 events, a season high, as the UC men’s team won 197-97, and the UC women’s team won 181-106. Cincinnati picked up their second home sweep in a row after accomplishing the feat against Kenyon College on Jan. 13.

“The team competed really well today,” said head coach Mandy Commons-DiSalle. “We were able to switch up the lineup and give them the opportunity to race in some different events. They are looking great for this point in the season and have one final week of racing ahead of us to look forward to.”

Junior Hunter Gubeno was a force inside the Keating Aquatic Center as he won three individual events and was the lead swimmer on the men’s 200-yard medley-winning team. The reigning American Athletic Conference Male Swimmer of the Week took first place in the 100-yard backstroke (49.48), 100-yard freestyle (45.59), and the 200-yard individual medley (1:50.71).

Joining Gubeno on the 200-yard medley relay team was fifth-year senior Conner Funke, junior Drew Hawthorne, and freshman Jet Fuhrmann, as they won with a time of 1:30.94.

Both Funke and Hawthorne each picked up an additional event win as well. Funke won the men’s 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 56.21, and Hawthorne clocked in at 21.01 seconds to win the men’s 50-yard freestyle.

The UC women also claim first in their 200-yard medley relay race as freshmen Grace GavinKaylee NagelJoleigh Crye and junior Jessica Davis recorded a time of 1:43.71.

Crye would also take first in the women’s 100-yard butterfly (56.83) and Nagel won the women’s 100-yard breaststroke (1:04.43).

On the diving side, freshmen Preston LandoltAlex Givens, and sophomore Will Claus each broke the 300-point mark and qualified for the NCAA Diving Zones. In the men’s 1-meter dive, Claus won the event with a score of 304.28 points and Landolt placed second, scoring 300.15 points. Givens won the men’s 3-meter diving event with a score of 303.60 points.

Freshman Ingrid Fretz picked up two event wins during the meet. She won the women’s 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:35.39 and the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:08.28.

Other Bearcats to finish first in their events were senior Kevin Leibold in the men’s 1000-yard freestyle (9:13.15) and junior Tommy Eaton in the men’s 100-yard butterfly (49.76).

Senior Katherine Connolly in the women’s 200 yard butterfly (2:07.53), freshman Annabelle Young in the women’s 200-yard breaststroke (2:21.31) and freshman Ella Chown in the women’s 200-yard individually medley also earned event wins.

The Bearcats closed out the day with the UC men winning the 400-yard freestyle relay. The men’s team consisting of senior Michael Balcerak, Hawthorne, senior Mohamed Abdelbaky, and Fuhrmann won with a time of 3:02.26.

The Bearcats will be back inside the Keating Aquatic Center for the final time this season as they will host Kentucky on Friday. Diving will start at 1:00 p.m. ET. followed by the swimming portion at 4 p.m. ET.

CINCINNATI – Men’s and women’s swimming opened up the spring semester on Friday, traveling across town to face the Cincinnati Bearcats at the Keating Aquatic Center. The Musketeers collected 10 event wins against the Bearcats, and will be back in the pool tomorrow afternoon at Bellarmine.

  • Kali FischerJulianne LiblerErin Ritz and Olivia Oyster set a time of 1:45.47 in the 200 medley relay to lead Xavier and place second.
  • Sydney Smith led Xavier in the 1000 free, setting a time of 10:51.75 to place second.
  • Kali Fischer won the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:52.65. Fischer also won the 200 back with a time of 2:03.42.
  • Reese Turner’s time of 58.30 led Xavier in the 100 back.
  • Julianne Libler led Xavier with a third place finish in the 100 breaks, finishing in 1:06.41.
  • Erin Ritz finished second in the 100 fly with a time of 58.10 while her time of 2:09.06 in the 200 fly led Xavier and placed third.
  • Olivia Oyster swept the free style sprints, taking the 50 free in a time of 24.00 and the 100 free in a time of 52.09.
  • Emily Guerrera placed third in the 200 breast with a time of 2:28.87.
  • Clara Keiser placed second in the 500 free with a time of 5:08.96.
  • Amy Van Son led Xavier in the 200 IM with a time of 2:13.94.
  • Olivia OysterClara KeiserClare Bosse and Kali Fischer took the top spot in the 400 free relay, finishing in a time of 3:28.51.
  • Xavier’s women fell by a score of 181-106.

  • Aiden Leamer won the 200 fly with a time of 1:50.09, and led Xavier in the 100 fly with a time of 50.18, placing third.
  • Kyle Hudson led Xavier in the freestyle sprints, finishing second in the 100 free with a time of 46.48 and third in the 50 free with a time of 21.37.
  • Jon Bernard won the 200 back with a time of 1:50.76.
  • Nathan Wall won the 200 breast with a time of 2:06.15. Wall also led Xavier in the 200 IM, setting a time of 1:55.71.
  • Kyle HudsonEthan WingGage Hannewyk and Andrew Martin place second with a time of 3:04.84 in the 400 free relay.
