Cincinnati’s Balcerak, SMU’s Grobler Claim Season’s Final AAC Weekly Awards

IRVING, Texas – The American Athletic Conference has announced the winners of the league’s weekly swimming honors, for the competition week ending Sunday, January 30.

Men’s Swimming Athlete of the Week

Michael Balcerak * Jr. * Cincinnati

Balcerak closed the regular season with a strong swim for Cincinnati in the 200 butterfly in a dual meet with No. 9 Louisville on Jan. 29. Balcerak swam his second-fastest 200 fly of the year in 1:45.69 to take the race win with an NCAA B-cut time against the Cardinals. Balcerak added a runner-up showing in the 500 freestyle (4:27.69) in the meet versus Louisville.

Women’s Swimming Athlete of the Week

Gabi Grobler * Sr. * SMU

Grobler reached the podium twice in a dual meet showdown with No. 22 Texas A&M on Jan. 28. Grobler placed second in the 200 IM with a time of 2:03.31 and added a third-place showing in the 100 backstroke after clocking a time of :56.67. Grobler is The American leader in both the 200 IM (NCAA B-cut time) and the 100 backstroke this season.
