At the 2021 North Carolina 4A High School State Championships, age-group star and US National Team member Claire Curzan tied the national independent school record and swam the fastest time in a high school meet in history in the 100 yard butterfly with a time of 50.35.

The junior from Cardinal Gibbons High School helped lead her team to an 8th place finish at the meet. In addition to her 100 fly performance, Curzan also won the 100 backstroke in a time of 51.57 and split a 48.73 leading-off the 400 freestyle relay. Although Curzan was also on the 200 medley relay, her split wasn’t published as the team was disqualified.

Curzan originally set the 100 butterfly record at last year’s State Championships. A sophomore at the time, Curzan shattered Tori Huske’s old National High School record of 51.29 with her performance, setting a new 15-16 NAG record in the process. However, the NAG record has since been lowered as Curzan posted a time of 49.73 in August while swimming with her club team, the TAC Titans.
In addition to her short course performances, Curzan has also become one of the country’s top long course butterflies after posting a time of 56.61 in the 100m fly in November, which made her the 3rd fastest American of all-time.
It’s like kissing yourself.
Ties are so frustrating…still, great swim for Claire!!
Greaat swim, BUT, a swimmer every other lane, but the stands are full #### covid lol
Stands were only comprised of masked social distances meet competitors. No spectators allowed.
I was there for the 3A state meet on Thursday. The stands were only for swimmers and coaches, no spectators. Distancing was enforced and bleachers were marked. Everyone was wearing masks except when in the pool swimming.
Wait, I’m confused.
Headline: “Claire Curzan Ties National Independent High School Record In 100 Fly”
Caption: “At the 2021 North Carolina 4A High School State Championships Claire Curzan broke the national independent school record with a time of 50.35 in the 100 fly”
If only there was a body of text where more information could be found to help you solve this puzzle.
SwimSwam stories shouldn’t be a puzzle to decipher. At the very least, the headline and caption shouldn’t contradict each other. I read the article and still can’t figure it out.
Hmm, shouldn’t be hard when you read the splits comparison. She set the high school record in 2020. She tied it in 2021. Yes, the article intro wasn’t clear, but it’s not that hard.
So which is wrong, the headline or the caption?
But why male models?
If only there was a body of text where more information could be found to help you solve this puzzle.
Agreed. But that body of text is nowhere to be found on this page.
If only SwimSwam had an editor that could proofread so every single article didn’t have some sort of error.
She tied it. The caption has been fixed.
Wow.. only 22 strokes ( 4,6,6 and 6 ) with 5 seconds of each 25 yds
underwater ( approx) . GOLD MEDAL MEL….care to comment from a
“ FLYER’s perspective ? She is the real deal!!
Most 49.7/56.6 female flyers are “the real deal”
I agree.. and the good thing for this coming Olympic year is , it definitely translates to LC! ( as opposed to some other short course phenoms where
this doesn’t necessarily apply)
Lighten up on the exclamation points.
why?
All like…2 of them
Will she have another shot at trying to break 50. this szn or is that going to have to wait a little longer?
Short Course Sectionals March 5-7 in her home pool. Guessing she might swim the 100 Fly at that meet.
So much opening speed
