12-year old Claire Tuggle, after just missing a National Age Group Record in the 100 free on Wednesday, has cracked the 11-12 mark in the 200 free during Thursday’s prelims. Tuggle swam a 1:48.85, which breaks the vintage-2009 record of 1:49.64 set by Kylie Stewart.
The time was good enough to qualify Tuggle for the A-Final in 8th place, which makes her the youngest finalist by 4 years. There wasn’t another swimmer in the entire field of 235 swimmers as young as Tuggle, and only a single other swimmer as young as 13.
Tuggle’s splits, by 50:
- 25.07
- 27.31 (52.38)
- 28.44 (1:20.82)
- 28.03 (1:48.85)
I told you last week to add the name of Claire Tuggle for possible NAG records at that meet. It was even more expected after her huge time drop in the 100 free. It was the first time I’ve watched her swim and it was impressive. Her technique is great for a 12-year-old girl.
No doubt she’s the next big thing in US women’s freestyle. And her IM is pretty good too. Simply a huge talent.
You can learn more from her in that video.

Race Video?
Reason # 1 to give up competitive swimming: a 12 y/o girl just tapped your PB 200 y free (done back when I was 18).
When I was 12 I recall swimming a 2:08
Ain’t no struggle for Claire Tuggle
A 12-year-old-girl swimming a 1:48? Oh. My. WOW!!!!!!!! I have never been as impressed with America’s new crop of age-groupers than I am at this moment.
Wow. That’s quick
