The Cleveland State University men’s and women’s swimming & diving teams resumed action by sweeping host Ashland Saturday afternoon inside Messerly Natatorium.
The CSU women won, 182-90, while the Viking men posted a 176-105 victory. Cleveland State won 28 of the 32 combined events on the day, winning 14 of 16 on both the men’s and women’s sides.
Nine different Viking women won individual events while eight CSU men posted at least one first-place finish.
Freshman Lexie Kostelnik and junior Molly McNamara both won a pair of swimming events. Rookie Erica Henrichsenwon on both diving boards with scores of 228.45 and 236.25 on 1-meter and 3-meter, respectively.
Kostelnik won the 200 butterfly in 2:17.68 and claimed the 500 freestyle in 5:16.62. She won the former event by over four seconds and the latter by over 10 seconds.
McNamara topped the field in the 200 breaststroke in 2:29.04 and the 100 butterfly in 58.11 seconds, winning both events by over two seconds. It was the first time McNamara swam the 200 breaststroke as a collegian.
Sophomore Gabriella Marinelli joined Kostelnik in helping CSU sweep the distance events as she won the 1000 freestyle in 10:57.00. She was over 14 seconds clear of the field while swimming the event for the first time as a collegian.
Senior Tobie Zeller teamed up with McNamara to sweep the breaststroke events for the Vikings, as Zeller took first in the 100 in 1:06.84.
Freshman Alana Cartwright and sophomore Chuchu Yang combined to sweep the backstroke events for Cleveland State. Cartwright won the 100 in a personal-best 1:00.32, winning by over two seconds, while Yang topped the field in the 200 in 2:08.59, nearly three seconds clear of the runner-up.
Senior Jamie VanDewerker claimed the 50 freestyle win for CSU (25.02) while rookie Dana Bender was the first to touch the wall in the 200 IM (2:19.00).
CSU’s winning quartet in the 200 medley relay—junior Cassandra Oltman, freshman Gracyn McQueary, sophomore Madisyn Jaszcz and junior Abbie Kaple—stopped the clock in 1:50.55.
The Vikings won the 200 free relay in 1:41.44 as junior Claudia Zido, sophomore Meghan Bobick, freshman Shaw Barney and junior Emma Flynn combined for the victory.
On the men’s side, sophomores DJ Arslanian and Tyler Stevenson led the way by each winning two individual events and swimming on a winning relay.
Arslanian won the 200 butterfly in 1:54.09, over two seconds clear of the field, and took first in the 100 freestyle in 47.12 seconds. He then swam the lead leg on CSU’s winning 200 free relay squad and was followed by senior Grant Wethington, junior Addison Kaufmann and sophomore Austin Spruill. The quartet finished in 1:27.97.
Stevenson won a sprint event and a distance event, taking the 50 freestyle in 22.08 seconds and winning the 500 in 4:46.44. He had begun his day by swimming the second leg on CSU’s 200 medley relay that won in 1:36.94. Freshman Dominik Niedzialek led off the winning medley relay, Wethington swam the third leg and freshman Patrick Lance swam the anchor leg.
In addition to being on both winning relay squads, Wethington was first in the 100 butterfly in 51.99 seconds. Niedzialek also won an individual event along with a relay victory, as he won the 1000 freestyle in 9:44.40. He topped the field by over 14 seconds while swimming the event for the first time this season.
Junior Jason van der Touw won both individual events he entered Saturday. He took first in the 100 backstroke, in 52.37 seconds, and in the 200 IM, in 1:56.85.
Junior Sean Mulvin and senior Patrick Tippen also won individual swimming events for the Vikings. Mulvin won the 200 freestyle in 1:46.83, winning by nearly three seconds, and was also the runner-up in the 100 free (47.65). Tippen topped the seven-man field in the 100 breaststroke, stopping the clock in 59.85 seconds.
Junior Curtis Roden swept the diving events for the CSU men. His 1-meter (295.28) and 3-meter (312.30) scores were both fewer than 10 points from NCAA Zones standards.
The CSU women took the top four spots in the 100 breaststroke, 200 backstroke and 200 butterfly and the top three positions in the 100 fly and 200 IM.
Cleveland State will now take about a month off from competition over the semester break. The Vikings will resume action on the second weekend of January as they welcome three Horizon League schools over two days of dual action.

The Ashland University swimming & diving teams competed in their final competition before taking four weeks off for Christmas break by welcoming Division I Cleveland State to Messerly Natatorium on Saturday (Dec. 9) afternoon.
The Eagles won four individual events in the dual meet with senior Grace Reichardclaiming the top spot in two races and freshman Dylan Nasser and junior Daniel Callis each picking up wins.
Cleveland State won the meet with the women taking a 182-90 decision and the men winning by a 176-105 margin.
For the men, Nasser earned the victory in the 200 backstroke, swimming the race in 1:55.70. Junior Keegan Goeke also placed in the top three in the event with a time of 2:03.63. Nasser and Goeke also finished second and third, respectively in the 100 backstroke.
Callis’ win came in the 200 breaststroke as the Eagles took the top two spots in the heat. Callis touched the pad at 2:13.67, while junior Matthew Bernsdorf clocked in at 2:18.63.
Nasser was also second in the 200 individual medley with a time of 1:59.21 while senior Christopher Georgiadis was third with a time of 2:00.11. Georgiadis was also second in the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:56.86.
Callis was second in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:00.40 while sophomore Grant Stahl was third at 1:02.30.
Senior Josh Nixon and sophomore Aaron Bradfield were second and third, respectively, in the 100 butterfly with Nixon timing in at 55.79 seconds. Bradfield was a half-second behind at 56.28.
In the 500 freestyle, senior Ryan Deemer placed second with a time of 4:59.79 while freshman Kyle Feuerstine was third at 5:09.17.
The Eagles also had two of the top three in the 100 freestyle as junior Ben Keilholz was second (50.30 seconds) and senior Nick Noewas third (51.31).
Deemer (1000 freestyle), Noe (200 freestyle) and Nixon (50 freestyle) each also had third place finishes on Saturday.
Nixon, Keilholz, Noe and Stahl combined to finish second in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:29.19. Nasser, Callis, Goeke and Keilholz comprised the 200 medley relay squad that clocked in at 1:37.47 for third place.
For the women’s team, Reichard took the top spot in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:56.63. She was also first in the 100 freestyle, touching the pad in 53.56 seconds. Freshman Maura Delaney was third in that race.
Senior Zoe Scarpone had a pair of second place finishes in the 100 butterfly (1:03.68) and 200 individual medley (2:22.00). Grady was third in the 100 butterfly and junior Destiny Camp was third in the 200 IM.
Junior Julia Grady came in second place in the 50 freestyle with a time of 25.65 seconds. In the 200 breaststroke, junior Sophie Brightman was second (2:39.71) and Camp was third (2:42.54).
The Eagles also placed two in the top three in the 500 freestyle with junior Erin Staley taking second (5:33.68) and senior Maddie Olander finishing third (5:40.56). Staley was also third in the 1000 freestyle (11:18.35).
Senior Courtney Patterson had two top-three finishes, coming in second in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:29.55 and third in the 100 backstroke at 1:08.58.
Sophomore Maddy Cronin was second both the 1-meter (151.28) and 3-meter (144.00) diving events.
Grady, Reichard, Brightman and Delaney also combined to finish second in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:42.16.
The Eagles now have a four-week break before returning to the pool competitively on Jan. 5 for a dual at Catawba.
