Cleveland State Topples Youngstown State In Horizon League Clash

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland State women picked up their first win of the year after defeating Youngstown State at home on Saturday afternoon, 179-121. On the day, the Vikings had nine individual wins and swept both relays.

Haley PalmerKellsie Krisch, and Audrey Butcher led the way with two wins apiece.

Cleveland State opened the swimming portion of the meet with a first-and-second-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay. The A-team of Audrey ButcherGrace ButcherEllie Mckibbin, and Grace Chelf clocked a time of 1:48.53.

The Vikings went one-and-two in the 100-yard backstroke with A. Butcher (59.79) edging out Alaina Brown (1:00.75).

G. Butcher was victorious in the 100-yard breaststroke, touching the wall in 1:06.48.

The 200-yard butterfly was won by Tess Walsh with a time of 2:09.95.

Palmer sprinted to a time of 24.72 to win the 50-yard freestyle and then won the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 53.84.

Cleveland State went one through three in the 200-yard backstroke with Chelf (2:06.64), Brown (2:11.21), and Kayla Brock (2:13.20).

Krisch earned the win in the 200-yard breaststroke after touching the wall in 2:25.92 and was also victorious in the 200-yard IM, stopping the clock in 2:12.66.

The 100-yard butterfly saw the Vikings go one-and-two with A. Butcher (1:00.09) and Walsh (1:00.52).

The Green and White capped off the meet with the first two spots of the 400-yard freestyle relay as the A-team of Brown, Ciez, Palmer, and Chelf clocked a 3:38.24.

Cleveland State will prepare for the 11th annual Magnus Cup Invitational, which runs from Thursday, Nov. 16 through Saturday, Nov. 18. Additionally, on Sunday, a long-course time trial will be held. Prelims will be at 9 a.m. each day, with finals taking place at 6 p.m. Diving will take place between the sessions on the three days.

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Viking men won their second dual of the year after toppling Youngstown State at home on Saturday afternoon, 182-116. On the day, the Green and White claimed seven individual wins and both the diving and relay events.

The Vikings went one-and-two in 3m diving to start the meet with Xander Austin (278.85) and James Wolf (274.95). Austin would again win on the boards, claiming 1m with a score of 268.05.

Cleveland State started the swimming portion with a win in the 200-yard medley relay with the team of Kenny ThomasTyler SchultzePaddy Johnston, and Josh Merchbaker finishing in 1:32.33.

Jackson Nester won three events on the afternoon; 1000-yard freestyle (9:33.58), 200-yard backstroke (1:50.08), and 200-yard IM (1:53.33).

The Green and White dominated the 200-yard freestyle, claiming the top four spots with Johnston (1:41.11), Connor Green (1:44.78), Daniel Lyngaas (1:44.95), and Quinn DeGraaf (1:44.96).

Dogukan Tombul (50.81) edged out teammate, Thomas (51.69) to win the 100-yard backstroke.

The 200-yard butterfly went to Thomas Lundin, finishing in 1:51.77.

Merchbaker sprinted to a time of 21.03 to win the 50-yard freestyle.

The Vikings capped off the meet with a victory in the 400-yard freestyle relay as Thomas, Merchbaker, Tombul, and Johnston finished in 3:07.00.

Cleveland, Ohio – The Youngstown State men’s and women’s swimming and diving programs won 10 events but came up short in their Horizon League matchup with Cleveland State at the Busbey Natatorium on Saturday.

The women were defeated by the Vikings, 179-121, while the men lost 182-116.

Miriam Frass led the women’s team with three individual event victories, winning each individual event she competed in. She opened the day with a victory in the 1000 free by clocking a 10:38.68. Frass followed that up by winning the 200 free with a time of 1:56.22 before earning a victory in the 500 free with a time of 5:11.68.

The women also swept both diving events with Dasha Toth earning the victory in the three-meter dive with a score of 230.70 and Hanna Held winning the one-meter dive, scoring a 258.00.

James Slessor led the men’s team by sweeping the breaststroke events. He clocked a 57.40 to win the 100 breast and a 2:05.94 in his victory in the 200 breast.

Gavin Redden also earned a victory for the men, clocking a 46.19 in the 100 free. Gavin Webb touched first in the 500 free with a time of 4:42.01. Webb also finished second in the 1000 free as he clocked a 9:39.95.

Aleksa Radenovic picked up a victory in the 100 fly, swimming a time of 50.00. Like Webb, Radenovic also added a second-place finish to his victory by clocking a 1:52.10 in the 200 fly.

The Penguins’ diving team will return to action at the West Virginia Invite in Morgantown W.Va. on Nov. 16-Nov. 18. The swimmers and divers will be back together to compete at the Miami (OH) Invite from Nov. 30-Dec. 2 at the Nixon Aquatic Center in Oxford, Ohio.
