Club Wolverine’s Hannah Bellard Hits PB Of 16:07.53 In The 1650 (Austin Sectionals)

Yesterday was the final day of racing at the 2023 Four Corners Speedo Sectionals in Austin, Texas. The last day of racing featured the 1650, 200 IM, 50 free, and 400 medley relay.

Scottsdale Aquatic Club topped the combined team standings with 2255.5 points overall. Club Wolverine took 2nd with 1738 points, while the Denver Hilltoppers rounded out the top three teams with a total of 1476 points. On the men’s side, Swim Neptune took the top spot with 1402.5 points, while Club Wolverine won the women’s meet with 1373.5 points.

Club Wolverine’s Hannah Bellard secured her 5th individual victory of the weekend with a best time of 16:07.53 in the women’s 1650. The Michigan commit dropped nearly four seconds from the best time she had set last month, and was over twenty seconds faster than she was in March of last year. 15-year-old Madi Mintenko finished 2nd with a best time of 16:19.47, while 14-year-old Paige Downey from Gold Medal Swim Club placed 3rd with a best time of 16:22.41. Downey’s time notably ranks her 34th all-time for 13-14 girls.

Carson Hick dominated the men’s 1650. Hick, a Kentucky commit, posted a best time of 15:17.84 to clear the field by nearly nine seconds. Gold Medal Swim Club’s Trey Hesser had a fantastic swim to move from 26th to 2nd. Hesser dropped over 40 seconds from his previous best to stop the clock at 15:26.12.

Caroline Bricker earned her 3rd win of the weekend in the 200 IM. The Stanford commit recorded a final time of 1:57.91, which marks a personal best by a few tenths. Joining Bricker under the two-minute mark was Malia Rausch, who finished 2nd with a personal best time of 1:58.65.

Keaton Jones from Swim Neptune decisively won the men’s 200 IM, adding his 3rd victory of the weekend. Jones recorded a 1:45.51 in finals to drop over a second and a half from his previous best he had swum over a year ago. His swim gets him just inside the all-time top-100 for 17-18 boys, coming in at 90th. Daniel Li also had dropped from his entry time to post a 1:47.17 to take 2nd.

Three swimmers broke 23-seconds in the women’s 50 freestyle, led by Lexi Greenhawt from the Denver Hilltoppers. Greenhawt got her hand on the wall first at 22.72, coming in just a hundredth slower than her best time from this meet last year. Lucy Mehraban from Club Wolverine touched 2nd in a best time of 22.81, while Lawson Ficken finished 3rd at 22.99.

Jordan Tiffany earned his 4th individual victory of the meet in the men’s 50 freestyle, as he topped the field with a personal best time of 19.41. Joining him under 20-seconds was Jack Schuster from the Aquawolves, who posted a 19.79 in finals after setting a personal best of 19.60 in prelims.

Club Wolverine’s 400 medley relay team of Lily Cleason (53.88), Stella Chapman (1:03.82), Bellard (52.28), and Mehraban (49.80) finished first in 3:39.78. On the men’s side, Swim Neptune’s ‘A’ and ‘B’ teams went 1-2. The ‘A’ team finished 1st with a 3:11.50, led by Jones on the backstroke leg. Jones’ opening split of 46.90 was a personal best by 0.07, and was half a second quicker than he swam in the individual event.
