Cody Miller, Clark Smith to Race at 2019 KMSC Pro-Am

The 2019 King Marlin Swim Club Pro-Am Classic will continue its tradition of giving away big cash prizes to professional swimmers, even if not many professionals are in attendance at this year’s meet.

Likely an impact, at least in part, of the International Swimming League meet going on this weekend in Las Vegas, there are fewer professionals who will be competing for prizes at this year’s meet. Each individual event has $1,000 in cash prizes available, with $1,600 available in each of the men’s and women’s mile, and $2,000 total available for the 50 freestyle shootout events for men and women. That makes for over $40,000 in total cash prizes available, though most of that money appears as though it will go unclaimed.

Prize Money – Individual Events:

• 1st place – $600
• 2nd place – $300
• 3rd place – $100

Prize Money – Bill Rose Mile:

• 1st place – $1,200
• 2nd place – $300
• 3rd place – $100

Prize Money – 50 Freestyle Shootout:

• 1st place – $1,200
• 2nd place – $600
• 3rd place – $200

The top 3 professional athletes in championship finals are eligible for prizes, while amateur athletes will compete for merchandise credits.

Among the pros in attendance are 24-year old Olympic gold medalist Clark Smith. This will be his 2nd meet since this summer’s US National Championships, following an age group meet he raced in November where he swam 4:15.6 in the 500 yard free and 1:35.5 in the 200 yard free.

This weekend, Smith is entered as the top seed in the 100 free, 200 free, 500 free, and 1650 free (with no scratches allowed).

Also racing at the meet will be 19-year old US National Teamer Erica Sullivan as part of a big group of Sandpipers of Nevada in attendance (they hold the top 6 seeds in the women’s 1650 free). Sullivan is currently training with her home club toward the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games while deferring her enrollment at USC.

The 50 free shootout races also have some pros racing. That includes 2012 Olympic Trials finalist and Pan American Games gold medalist Giles Smith, as well as 34-year old former collegiate swimmers Kevin Bartell and Andrew Cox.

Olympic medalist and world-famous vlogger Cody Miller, who represents the Sandpipers but trains at the University of Indiana, will also be in attendance, racing the 50 breast, 100 breast, 200 breast, and 50 fly. Those breaststroke races will have among the deepest fields of pros, including former Army – West Point swimmer Joe Daniels, and Fike Swimming founder and US Masters Swimmer James Fike.

Aside from that, the meet will mostly go to junior-aged and collegiate swimmers competitors, including names like Missouri High School State Champion in the 100 breaststroke Brayden Cole and 5-time AAC Conference Champion of SMU Erin Trahan.
