Cody Miller on Teammate Josh Matheny Getting “Reps under pressure”

2023 U.S. NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

Cody Miller was very proud of his Indiana training partner Josh Matheny after the young Hoosier qualified for the world championship team in both the 100 and 200 breaststroke. Miller emphasized that the more reps Matheny can get under this kind of pressure, the more he will thrive on a national and international stage.

Matheny’s breaststroke has improved crazily at Indiana. Most noticeably, he increases his tempo on the last 25 meters of both breast distances

Josh is swimming exactly as he always did (I have known him since he was 10.5yrs old, he might have had different technique before then, idk).

His turnaround (tempo) is Peety-esque on both 100 and 200.

The hope is (was?) that Indiana coaches could improve his start, pullout and turn. With just an average in these three categories, Josh would already be low 58, 2:07 or better, swimmer. He always starts swimming from a half-body length deficit (from a bad start/pullout), and then falls equally behind on a turn.

IU did not teach him anything. He is a bit stronger than he was in HS, and that is it. He was a beast, and still is, with enormous potential.… Read more »

Josh’s pullouts, starts, and turns have wildly improved in his time at indiana, yes he’s still behind but that’s against people like fink with the best pullouts in the world versus before college being behind other junior level swimmers off the pullouts, who he now is staying even with or beating
