2022 QUEENSLAND CHAMPIONSHIPS

The 2022 Queensland Championships continued from Brisbane Aquatic Centre with Olympic champion Ariarne Titmus securing another gold.

After winning the women’s 200m free last night, the 22-year-old topped the 400m freestyle podium by a healthy margin.

Touching the wall in a mark of 4:06.50, Titmus secured gold over visiting New Zealand swimmer Eve Thomas and fellow Australian Kiah MelvertonThomas snagged silver in 4:12.19 while Melverton rounded out the top 3 in 4:12.48.

For St. Peters Western swimmer Titmus, tonight’s sub-4:07 effort renders her the 3rd fastest swimmer in the world this season. Her performance sits only behind American nemesis Katie Ledecky‘s 3:59.71 and Canadian teen phenom Summer McIntosh‘s World Junior Record 3:59.79. Both of those outings were registered at the U.S. Open earlier this month.

Reigning 400m free world champion Elijah Winnington made some noise in the men’s race, stopping the clock in a time of 3:45.84. That gave the 22-year-old St. Peters Western star the victory over Sam Short. 19-year-old Short of Rackley clocked 3:46.63 as the runner-up.

For Winnington, his performance here checks in among the top 10 performances of his career, one which boasts a lifetime best of 3:42.65 from the 2021 Australian Swimming Trials.

As for Short, his silver medal-worthy result tonight registers as his 3rd swiftest performance, sitting only behind is PB of 3:44.34 from earlier this year and 3:46.33 from last year.

Also in the water was 25-year-old Cody Simpson who produced a big lifetime best in the men’s 100m fly. Taking the event in a time of 51.78, Simpson logged the only sub-52 second time of the field.

Simpson opened in 24.07 and closed in 27.71 to shave .01 off of his previous career-quickest of 51.79. That result was posted at this year’s Australian Swimming Championships and gave the Griffith University star his spot on the Commonwealth Games roster.

Simpson ultimately placed 5th in Birmingham in a time of 52.06.

Although this is not a qualifying meet for Fukuoka 2023, Simpson’s 51.79 effort here dips under the FINA ‘A’ cut of 51.96 needed to make the cut for those long course World Championships. The Aussie now breaks up a block of Japanese swimmers to slide into the season’s world rankings in slot #3.

20-year-old O’Leary checked with a time of 54.99 for silver while American Linnea Mack also landed on the podium in a time of 55.46.

Additional Winners

  • Olympian Brianna Throssell got the job done for gold in the women’s 100m fly, scoring the top spot in a time of 59.07.
  • The men’s 100m breast saw 21-year-old Southport athlete Nash Wilkes produce a time of 1:01.39 for the victory.
  • The men’s 100m free was won by William Yang who posted a time of 49.25. That edged out Cameron McEvoy who touched just .01 behind in 49.26.

Pretty sure Winnington went 3.41.22 this year in Budapest. When he won World Champs LC. Hard to forget.
That is his actual PB Retta.

I have yet to learn about his singing career. Did he do dancing or a lot of physical stuff in his shows? He had to do something to maintain athleticism.

I’ll give Cody his due…he’s an impressive swimmer for a guy who walked away from the sport during his peak competition years. It makes you wonder where he would be if fully dedicated from 15-23 years old.

Quite possible he wouldn’t be swimming here at this level right now.. the same with Ed Moses, stepping away could have kept him happy with the sport and willing to give it a go now when he’s ready.

Ed Moses didn’t start swimming until his Senior year in high school; his career was relatively short.

Also makes you wonder if it’s really so bad to take some time away from the sport. I don’t mean eight years necessarily, but maybe it doesn’t hurt a kid to take a season or more off to pursue another sport or other interests.

Ash Barty took a couple of years off tennis- came back to be World No1 for 3 years…..there seems to be more options these days for athletes.

Congrats, Cody. Now you can swim at Kristof’s side for the first two laps of a 200 fly.

Yeah so I’d say Simpson is in a solid place right now in the 1 fly. Top Aussie right now and for now #3 in the world this season.
