Division I Colgate University has hired former TCU assistant Andy Waeger as their new men’s and women’s head swimming and diving coach. He replaces Fernando Canales, who left the program after four seasons to begin a new role with the Turkish National Team.
Waeger was an assistant with the TCU men’s and women’s programs for two seasons, and before that was an NCAA Division II head coach for 9 years.
That includes 7 seasons at the helm of Lock Haven University, and before that 2 as the head coach of Slippery Rock University, both in Pennsylvania.
His first coaching position came at Fairmont State College in West Virginia, which is his alma mater, where he was a conference champion in the 200 breaststroke and a team captain.
“We are thrilled to welcome Andy, his wife, Kim, and his son, Aiden, to our Colgate athletics family,” said Colgate Director of Athletics Victoria M. Chun. “Andy understands what it takes to lead student-athletes to excel at one of the best academic universities in the nation, while offering them a superb Division I athletic experience.
Waeger takes over a Colgate program where the women were 6th and the men were 9th at the 2014 Patriot League Championship meet. Last season was not one of the highlights of Canales’ tenure at Colgate; the year prior, for example, the women were 3rd and the men 6th in the Patriot League.
congrats to both Colgate as well as Andy! Great person, great coach.
