Colgate Wins First Dual Meet Since 2019-20 With Sweep of Hamilton College

HAMILTON – Colgate swimming and diving capped off 2022 by winning their first dual meet since the 2019-20 season at home against Hamilton College on Friday night.

The Raiders won 24 events in the dual meet, with the women winning 198-98 and the men 152-110.

Right out of the bat, the women won the 200-yard medley relay as Brooke GarretsonRegan HauJordan Hurt, and Elizabeth Rainey came in at 1:50.38, two minutes faster than the nearest group. Elke AmbachAlyssa DennisAddisyn Donfris, and Mackenzie Ferguson placed third for the Raiders at 1:53.30. The men grabbed second and third place as Matt FreundRyan JeeJack Lira, and Matthew Szypula came in at 1:37.36. Jack CasavantCooper LueddeAlex Rose, and Peyton Wray were the quartet that finished third with 1:39.90.

Colgate grabbed first in the 1,000-yard free as Dana Witte came in at 10:49.98, with Wray finishing with 10:19.55. Emma Sengulaub and Zach Duthie both placed third for Colgate with 10:53.66 and 10:55.20. This is Duthie’s best finish of the season.

Keeping the streak of both teams taking first, sophomore Danielle McNerney and freshman Lira found themselves leading the 200-yard free with 1:58.53 and 1:47.26. Ambach placed third with 1:59.86, while sophomore Emmet Santry grabbed second for the men with 1:49.01.

The 100-yard back was all Colgate as the Raiders stole first and third place. Ferguson and Szypula garnered the wins with times of 59.50 and 54.10 seconds. Garretson and junior Neil Nejame placed third at 1:00.95 and 55.79 seconds.

The women dominated the 100-yard breaststroke as Hau and Dennis took first and third place with 1:07.67 and 1:11.09. Hau finished four seconds faster than the nearest Continental.

Continuing the trend of Colgate winning first place, Donfris and Freund won the 200-yard fly coming in at 2:09.39 and 1:55.03. Alexandra Mehos and Rose found themselves in third place as they finished at 2:14.29 and 2:03.15.

Lira won his second individual event during the 50-yard free, coming in at 22.10 seconds. Sophomore Luedde followed Lira at 22.30 seconds. Rainey and Hurt placed second and third for the women with 25.41 and 25.53 seconds.

Luedde won his first collegiate event in the 100-yard free, coming in at 48.27 seconds. Garretson and McNerney placed second and third for the women’s squad with times of 54.50 and 55.44 seconds.

Freshman Ferguson went on to win her first event of the meet in the 200-yard back with 2:11.63. Fellow Raiders Maggie DeLillo and Witte followed Ferguson at 2:14.26 and 2:15.17. Szypula won his second event for the men at 2:00.18, with Santry following at 2:01.85.

Audrey Collins was the next Raider to grab first place, winning the 200-yard breast for Colgate, coming in at 2:27.42.

Donfris and Freund were the next Raiders to grab wins during the 500-yard free with times of 5:17.80 and 4:58.06. Wray found himself in second place behind Freund at 4:58.34.

Freshmen Collins and Jee swept the 100-yard fly, coming in at 57.81 and 51.02 seconds. Hurt found herself in second place after Collins at 1:00.18.

The last individual event of the meet also went to Colgate, as Dennis and Jee won the 200-yard IM with 2:13.67 and 1:58.42. Ambach and DeLillo trailed after Dennis with 2:12.68 and 2:16.80.

The men took the final win of the meet in the 200-yard free relay as Freund, Jee, Lira, and Luedde came in at 1:28.61. Morgan Cecil, Rose, Santry, and Szypula placed third with 1:29.82. For the women, second and third place went to Colgate as Collins, Garretson, McNerney, and Rainey came in at 1:40.15, and Ferguson, Hau, Mehos, and Zoe Stokes finished at 1:43.83.

The diving squad ended the meet, grabbing first and second in the one and three-meter. Ella Olafsson won the one-meter with a final score of 227.33, while fellow freshman Kate Hoover followed with a final score of 213.98. The two first years swapped places in the three-meter, with Hoover grabbing the win with a final score of 207.00, and Olafsson placing second with 206.40.

Hamilton College swimmers finished first in three events but the Continentals lost to Division I Colgate University in a dual meet at Colgate’s Lineberry Natatorium on Friday night.

Hamilton had previously defeated Trinity College and Colby College in dual meets and finished second out of 10 teams in the Ithaca College Bomber Invitational. The Continentals return to competition after the holidays at Wesleyan University on Jan. 4, 2023, at 4 p.m.

Hamilton ended the meet on a high note with a victory in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The foursome of Jade Matthias ’26, Ashlyn Blessey ’26, Emma DiGiacomo ’25 and Sam Karlson ’23 posted a time of 1:38.51, and Karlson recorded a split of 23.80 seconds.

Karlson also captured first place in the 100 free with a time of 52.88 seconds. Matthias took the top spot in the 50 free in 24.75 seconds and was runner-up in the 100 backstroke (1:00.20).

Charlotte Moulson ’26 grabbed second place in the 200 free (1:59.56) and the 500 free (5:19.51). Irene Keh ’24 finished second in the 100 breaststroke (1:11.09) and the 200 breast (2:34.86).

Emma Robinson ’26 was runner-up in the 1,000 free (10:53.29) and fourth in the 200 individual medley (2:16.95). Ashley Kolpan ’24 posted a runner-up finish in the 200 butterfly (2:14.18), and Caroline Shen ’24 finished fourth in the 100 back (1:01.50).

In diving, Maggie Nye ’24 was third in the one-meter springboard event with 171.98 points.

Hamilton started the meet with an exciting victory in the 200-yard medley relay. The foursome of Ethan del Rosario ’24, Emilio Vicioso ’23, Jack Jee ’24 and Ethan Olivo ’26 posted a time of 1:37.26, edging Colgate by nine one-hundredths of a second.

Vicioso added a win in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:00.41 as the Continentals swept the top three places in the event. Edward Ha ’25 was runner-up (1:01.16) and Matthew Hake ’26 finished third (1:01.43).

Jee boasted three runner-up performances. He was second in the 100 freestyle with a time of 48.58 seconds, in the 100 butterfly in 51.38 seconds and in the 200 individual medley (2:01.18).

Ha accounted for the other win in the 200 breast (2:14.39). Nate Hays ’23 was second to Ha with a time of 2:15.64. Hays was also runner-up in the 1,000 free (10:42.87) and ended up third in the 200 IM (2:03.35).

Luke Engel ’25 landed in third place in the 200 free (1:50.56) and the 500 free (5:03.75). Jamie Boyd ’26 took second place in the 100 backstroke with a time of 55.78 seconds and was third in the 200 back (2:02.60).

Matt McGregor ’24 captured second place in the 200 fly (2:01.60), Henry Wiemeyer ’26 finished third in the 50 free in 22.61 seconds, and del Rosario was third in the 100 free with a time of 49.26 seconds.
