College Conferences Announce Weekly Swimming And Diving Award Winners

AAC Male Swimmer of the Week
Joao De Lucca, Louisville

A defending NCAA champion, De Lucca had a strong performance in an upset victory for the No. 19 Cardinals as they beat No. 12 Tennessee for the first time in school history, winning 167.5-132.5. De Lucca had two individual victories, in the 100-yard and 200-yard freestyle, while placing second in the 50-yard freestyle. De Lucca swam the 100-yard freestyle in 44.02, the top time in the NCAA thus far, while swimming the fifth best time in the NCAA with a 1:37.44 in the 200 freestyle. Both results were NCAA ‘B’ cuts.

AAC Female Swimmer of the Week
Jackie Keire, Cincinnati
In her second collegiate meet, Keire contributed to six total first place finishes as the Bearcats placed second at the West Virginia Invite. She swam in four individual freestyle events, winning all four. Keire opened the weekend with a win in the 1000-yard freestyle, finishing in 10:09.22, and followed that with a win in the 100-yard freestyle in 50.81. She won the 500-yard freestyle by a large margin, touching the wall in 4:58.65. She also won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:49.05. Keire was also part of the 200-yard medley relay and 800-yard freestyle relay that both placed first. Big 12 Men’s Swimmer of the Week
Bryce Bohman, West Virginia, Sr., Moline, Ill.
Scored crucial points for the Mountaineers in their dual-meet against the Penn State Nittany Lions with a second place finish in the 200 back (1:47.93) and 100 back (48.73).

Big 12 Women’s Swimmer of the Week
Samantha Tucker, Texas, Sr., Austin, Texas
Against UNC, Tucker posted second place finishes in the 200 free (1:48.67), 50 free (23.55) and the 400 freestyle relay (led off in 51.01). Against in-state rival Texas A&M, the senior placed first in the 200 free (1:47.95), second in the 200 medley relay (23.44 anchor leg), second in the 100 free (50.44) and third in the 50 free (23.42). Tucker’s effort of 1:47.95 in the 200 free (NCAA “B” cut) ranks fifth nationally.

Big 12 Men’s Diver of the Week
Liam McLaughlin, West Virginia, Sr., Medina, Ohio
McLaughlin stayed in fine form for the WVU divers last week, scoring two wins in the 1-meter (284.47) and 3-meter (324.75) against Penn State.

Big 12 Women’s Diver of the Week
Emma Ivory-Ganja, Texas, Jr., The Woodlands, Texas
Ivory-Ganja finished second in the both the 1-meter (284.40) and the 3-meter (329.70) against North Carolina. She then helped Texas sweep the diving events at Texas A&M with her winning score of 338.40 in the 3-meter event.

Big 10 Male Swimmer of the Week
Richard Funk, Michigan
Jr. – Edmonton, Alberta – Strathcona

  • Placed first in the 100-yard breaststroke (54.14), 200-yard breaststroke (1:58.82) and 200-yard medley relay (1:27.81) in Michigan’s double-dual meet with Indiana and Texas in Bloomington, Ind., on Oct. 25
  • His 100-yard breaststroke and 200-yard breaststroke times were an NCAA provisional qualifying mark
  • Trio of first-place finishes helped the Wolverines defeat the Hoosiers (203-97) and Longhorns (166-134)
  • Earned his second-career Swimmer of the Week award

  • Earned his first-career Diver of the Week honor

  • Placed first in the 100-yard butterfly (48.62), 100-yard backstroke (49.18) and 200-yard medley relay (1:31.40) in Ohio State’s dual meet against Kenyon College in Columbus, Ohio on Oct. 25
  • Three first-place finishes helped lead the Buckeyes to a 186-101 win over Kenyon College
  • Earned his first-career Freshman of the Week honor

  • Finished first in the 500-yard freestyle (4:49.01) and 1,000-yard freestyle (9:46.51) and third in the 200-yard freestyle (1:48.44) in Indiana’s double-dual meet with Michigan and Texas in Bloomington, Ind., on Oct. 25
  • Her two individual first-place finishes helped the Hoosiers defeat Michigan, 181-119
  • Earned her first-career Swimmer of the Week award

  • Placed first in the one-meter (295.75) and three-meter (303.65) diving competitions in the Indiana Intercollegiates in West Lafayette, Ind., on Oct. 26
  • Both dives qualified for NCAA Zone Diving standards
  • Helped guide the Boilermakers to a first-place team finish among seven teams

SEC FEMALE SWIMMER OF THE WEEK

Allyx Purcell, Auburn
Fr. • Southport, Australia
Purcell posted two wins during action at the Royals Open hosted by Queens University of Charlotte. She posted a season-best time in the 100 free, a sub-50 second mark (49.58), topping former Auburn national champion in the event, Arianna Vanderpool-Wallace. Purcell also won gold in the 50 free after touching the wall in 22.90. The freshman helped the 200 free relay team to a first-place finish in 1:31.08, the third best time in the country this season.
SEC FEMALE DIVER OF THE WEEK
Alex Bettridge, LSU
Jr. • Austin, Texas
Bettridge won both springboards in LSU win over Tulane Friday night. The junior posted season-high scores of 304.73 on the 1-meter board and 311.70 on the 3-meter. Her 304.73 on the 1-meter board ranks third highest in the SEC while her 3-meter finish is seventh-best in the league.
SEC FEMALE FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK
Heather Lundstrom, Tennessee
St. Louis, Mo.
Lundstrom broke two minutes in the 200 butterfly for the first time in college during Tennessee’s 169-124 dual meet win over South Carolina. The Missouri native turned in a 1:58.53 in the 200 fly and recorded a collegiate best time of 55.62 in the 100 fly. Her 200 fly time ranks second highest in the SEC.
SEC MALE SWIMMER OF THE WEEK
Sam Tierney, Missouri
Jr. • Plano, Texas
Tierney won three individual events and helped the Tigers two a relay victory as the Tigers defeated both Kentucky (267.5-177.5) and Southern Illinois (333-106) Oct. 24-25. The Texas native claimed top honors in the 100 back (49.35), 100 breast (55.89) and 200 breast (2:02.11) in the two-day meet. He also helped Missouri take first in the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:18.15, which stands as the fifth fastest in the nation this year.
SEC MALE DIVER OF THE WEEK
David Bonuchi, Missouri
Sr. • Columbia, Mo.
Bonuchi swept the springboard events in Mizzou’s two-day meet with Kentucky and Southern Illinois Oct. 24-25 in Carbondale, Ill. He posted season highs on both events en route to the sweep. The senior posted a score of 351.25 on the 1-meter and 396.80 on the 3-meter for the victories. Bonuchi has now won five of six events this season, including all three 3-meter competitions.
SEC MALE FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK
Brandon Flynn, Kentucky
York, Pa.
Flynn won all four races Oct. 24-25 against Missouri and Southern Illinois in Carbondale, Ill. He posted his first collegiate win in the men’s 400 individual medley on Oct. 24 after touching the wall in 3:58.11. Flynn also won the 500 freestyle in 4:31.75. On Oct. 25, freshman won the 1,000 yard freestyle in 9:21.94 before leading a 1-2-3 UK finish in the 500 free. The York, Pa. native took first in that event with a time of 4:32.26 ahead of teammates Matt Roman and Scott Crosthwaite.
