College Meet Roundup 11/12/15-11/14/15

This weekend saw a lighter than usual dual meet schedule for college teams around the country while many elite swimmers focused their attention in on the Arena Pro Series in Minneapolis. In case you missed them, here are just a few of the highlights from that meet:

  • In the 800 free, Katie Ledecky picked up her third win of the meet, touching in 8:19.16. She was followed by Becca Mann, who touched two seconds later at 8:21.77. These finishes were good for the top two times in the world so far this year.
  • Michael Phelps picked up his first win of the season, touching in 1:59.30 in the 200 IM. Not only was he the only swimmer under the two minute mark at the meet,  but his time was also the fourth fastest time in the world this year.
  • Nathan Adrian of California Aquatics posted a 21.56 in the 50 free; which was good for a pool record and world top-3 time.
  • The University of Louisville/Cardinal Aquatics had two international swimmers achieve FINA “A” cuts for the Rio Olympics. Finnish Tanja Kylliainen touched in 2:14.20 in the 200 IM and Venezuela’s Carlos Claverie finished the 200 breast in 2:10.86.
  • Although not an automatic Olympic cut, Elvis Burrows of the Bahamas did touch in 22.76 in the 50 free, which was good for a “B” cut.

In addition to the fast swimming seen in Minneapolis, there were several strong dual meet face off’s. The Texas men were undefeated on the road, taking down UNC and NC State, while the women were only able to pull out a win against NC State. Ohio was able to end Marshall’s undefeated streak, and both the Georgia and Penn State men’s and women’s teams came away from the weekend with all wins.
