There were a lot of great meets over the weekend, but the most exciting meet of the week was hands down the Georgia – UNC women’s meet in Athens. Last year’s NCAA runner-ups were the favorites heading into the weekend, but UNC came ready to race, nearly snapping their 94 home-win streak.
The meet came all the way down to the last individual event and the final relay. The Dawgs came up big with a 1-2-3 sweep of the 200 IM, leaving the final relay to decide the meet. UNC needed to finish first and second in the 400 freestyle relay to snap Georgia’s home-win streak.
North Carolina’s A relay won the 400 freestyle relay with a 3:18.33, but their B relay was disqualified, preventing them from winning the points they needed to stop Georgia. They were on pace to take second, however, had they not been disqualified. According to the results, North Carolina’s B relay was 1.3 seconds ahead of Georgia’s A relay through 350 yards.
Editor’s note: The results did not indicate which swimmer was disqualified, so the 1.3 second lead at 350 yards is meaningless. It is just interesting to compare for the sake of the argument.
Georgia’s women’s team improved their home-win streak to 95 wins with a final score of 152-148.

Gotta hand it to the tar heels. After finishing 18th at NCAAs last spring, coming within 4 points of winning a dual meet with the NCAA runner up team is pretty commendable. Should be an interesting year for those women. The men, a little off. But the women seem pretty hungry.
UNC probably rested for this meet. (They’ve done it before) UGA probably swam 7000 that morning.
