The women of Colorado College stepped up their game when it counted to take home victory by a bare 4 points over Western State Colorado University on Friday. The meet came down to the final relay – but without key performances and individual event victories by the Tigers, winning might have been out of the question.
Tiger sophomores Olivia Dilorati and Megan Gillespie and senior Brenna Day were the individual event winners who kept the Tigers in the running up to the final race. The all three were multiple event winners, Dilorati taking both backstroke events (1:03.63 and 2:19.74) as well as the 100 yard butterfly (1:01.88); Gillespie claimed the touch-out in the 400 IM (4:59.67) over WSCU freshman Akemi King. She combined that triumph with an earlier victory in the 200 butterfly (2:20.13) and a second place finish in the 200 breaststroke (2:41.03). Day sprinted to victory, taking first in the 50 (25.53) and 100 (56.32) freestyle races.
With the final relay to go, everything was riding on the team of Tiger sophomores Erin Holmes, Rebecca Adams and Katy Dalton led by senior Day. They took the lead from the very start and never relinqiushed it, holding off WSCU to win in 1:43.74, over a second ahead of their rivals.
