Columbia Captures Wins Over Penn In Ivy League Opener

NEW YORK — The Columbia men’s and women’s swimming and diving programs opened their 2023-24 Ivy League seasons on Friday at Percy Uris Natatorium with victories over the Penn Quakers. The men swam first, earning a 161-125 win, and the women swam later in the day, picking up a 159-141 win.

The men’s and women’s 200-medley relay teams kicked off both meets with victories. For the women, Aziza GanihanovaAshley HuAnthea Wong, and Emily MacDonald clocked in with a time of 1:43.52 to earn first. For the men, Isaac BeersMatthew LouBrian Lee, and Zion James finished with a time of 1:30.28 to win the event.

Adam Wu had a strong day for the men, winning three events. Wu won the 200-free with a time of 1:41.45, the 200-fly with a time of 1:49.38, and the 500-free with a time of 4:32.09.

Stanford Li also won multiple events for the men, taking the 100-back with a time of 49.82 and the 200-back with a time of 1:47.95.

Emily MacDonald and Aziza Ganihanova each won multiple events for the women, helping the squad earn the win. MacDonald excelled in the sprinting events, winning the 50-free and 100-free, with times of 23:31 and 50.79 respectively. Ganihanova won the 200-back with a time of 1:59.91 and then went on to win the 400-IM with a time of 4:22.67.

For the divers, Alice Diakova and Macy Pine dominated. Diakova won the 3m dive for the women with a score of 290.03, and Pine won the 1m dive with a score of 291.30.

“Fantastic start to the season for Alice and Macy!” Head Diving Coach Scott Donie said. “This included a personal best for Macy on the 1-meter. Both eclipsed the NCAA Zone Qualifying score on both events. I am a very proud coach.”

Other event winners for the men included Zach Vasser (0:29.87 – 1000-free), Zion James (50-free – 20.71), Noah Czelusta (100-free – 45.81), Brian Lee (100-fly – 48.26), and Beri Yang (200-IM – 1:51.67).

Other event winners for the women included Georgia Young (100-breast – 1:05.09) and Anthea Wong (100-fly – 56.20),

ON DECK
The women will travel to New Haven for a dual meet against Yale on Friday, November 10 at 5:00 p.m. The men will take on Princeton at the same time in New Jersey.

NEW YORK CITY – The University of Pennsylvania women’s swimming and diving team had the top four finishers in both distance races, but the Quakers narrowly fell to Columbia, 159-141, Friday afternoon.

Penn totaled seven first-place finishes against the Lions with two for sophomore Anna Moehn.

*Moehn was victorious in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:50.33, while Katya Eruslanova finished third (1:53.00).

*Penn’s first of two distance wins came in the 500-yard freestyle, won by Moehn (5:00.51). In that race, the Quakers took all four places with Amelia Girotto placing second (5:00.81), Sydney Bergstrom coming in third (5:00.89) and Maggie Straley in fourth (5:01.09).

*Anna Kalandadze earned a victory in the 1,000 free (10:01.93), Bergstrom in second (10:04.25), Amelia Girotto in third (10:12.94) and Straley in fourth (10:13.45).

*Kate Levensten won the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 56.42, teammate Charlotte Holliday placing third (57.74).

*Vanessa Chong won the 200-yard butterfly, timing in at 2:01.91. She also placed second in the 100 fly (56.26).

*Meredith Holcomb clocked in at 2:19.64 to place first in the 200-yard breaststroke.

*Abby Wickersham, Moehn, Keara McGowan and Margot Kaczorowski placed first in the 400 free relay with a time of 3:27.60.

*Earning a second-place finish in the 200-medley relay, Levensten, McGowan, Chong and Kaczorowski clocked in at 1:44.35.

*Wickersham took second in the 50 free (23.94) and 100 free (52.24), while McGowan placed third in that event (52.75).

*Eruslanova placed third in the 200 back (2:04.83).

*With a time of 4:27.24 in the 400-yard individual medley, Kalandadze took second place with Eruslanova earning a third-place finish (4.27.55).

*On the boards, Sadie Howard took third place in the three-meter dive (259.35) and the one-meter dive (250.43).

NEW YORK CITY – The University of Pennsylvania men’s swimming and diving team enjoyed quality performances from junior Matthew Fallon and junior diver Cody Hopkins, but ultimately fell short in a 161-125 defeat at Columbia Friday afternoon.

Both Fallon and Hopkins tallied a pair of first-place finishes to open up their 2023-24 seasons, but the Lions prevailed in New York City.

*Fallon started his day off with a victory in the 100-yard breaststroke, timing in at 53.13 and beating out Columbia’s Joshua Corn for second (55.65). He also took first in his main event, the 200 breast with a sub-2:00 1:59.19 to take first over the Lions’ Demirkan Demir (2:01.62). Fallon also put forth a strong effort in a distance race, taking second in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:34.00 to beat out teammate Truman Armstrong (4:37.15).

*Hopkins had the honor of leading off the meet in the three-meter dive, scoring a 346.20 to beat out teammate Jack Williams (339.00). He also took the victory in the one-meter dive with a score of 307.73.

*Penn’s only other win on the day came in the 400 free relay, earning a 1-2-3 sweep. The quartet of James CurreriLiam CampbellRyan Mcguirk and Alex Fu took first (3:04.21), while Xavier Hill, Armstrong, Daniel Gallagher and Peter Lee finished in second position with a time of 3:08.03. Placing third, Jonathan Javier KoumendakosSam DonchiHenry Sheils and Robert Melsom clocked in at 3:14.65.

*The 200 medley relay finished second with Gallagher, Fallon, Fu and Campbell (1:31.44).

*The freshman Melsom earned a second-place finish in the 1,000 free (9:36.39), with Kevin Keil taking third (9:40.78) and Armstrong placing fourth (9:43.17).

*Curreri finished second in the 100-yard backstroke (50.11), while in the 200 back, he nearly overtook Gallagher (1:48.91) for second, timing in at 1:48.91.

*Peter Whittington had a strong collegiate debut in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:50.71, topping teammate Fu (1:51.37) in third. Whittington also took third place in the 200 IM (1:52.64).

*Campbell earned a second-place finish in the 50 free (20.89), while Fu took third in the 100 fly (49.82).
