Columbia Men Down Navy on Senior Day for Sixth Straight Dual Win

Kevin Frifeldt and Michal Zyla each won two individual events, as the Columbia men wrapped up their home dual meet season with a perfect 4-0 record with a 167-131 defeat of the Navy Midshipmen.  Frifeldt swept the sprint events, leading a 1-2 Lions finish in the 50 free in 20.41, and holding off Navy’s Jamie Joseph to win the 100, 45.49 to 45.69.  Zyla and freshman teammate Cole Stevens went 1-2 in both backstrokes, finishing in 49.80 and 50.07 in the 100, and 1:48.22 and 1:50.45 in the 200.

Marlin Brutkiewicz was Navy’s lone double winner.  The senior won the 100 and 200 breaststrokes decisively, with final times of 55.28 and 2:01.96, respectively.

NEW YORK –  On Friday, Jan. 27, the Columbia men’s swimming & diving team pushed its win streak to five straight after a brilliant performance in Uris Pool to defeat Navy, 167-131. The Lions finish the home season unbeaten at 4-0 as they took down the Midshipmen in their home finale and improve to 7-2 overall behind their sixth-consecutive win.

The day was filled with celebration as Columbia honored seniors Nikita Bondarenko,Forrest Davis, James Delgado, Jack Foster, Connor Fraser, Terry Li and Julian Radice,

The first Columbia victory of the day came in the 200 medley relay with the squad of Cole Stevens, Jae Park , Terry Li and Mark Gullick combining for a time of 1:29.38. Brian Tsaufollowed with his third-straight win the 1000 freestyle with a time of 9:25.42, along with a runner-up performance by Eric Ng in the event at 9:29.96.

Rookie Nian-guo Liu continued his dominance in the 200 freestyle this season with another 200 freestyle crown in 1:39.20, his fifth-striaght in the event. He finished just ahead of senior Nikita Bondarenko who placed second with a time of 1:39.44. Michal Zylaand Cole Stevens battled it out in the 100 backstroke with Zyla finishing first at 49.80, followed by Stevens at 50.07.

The Lions were dominant in the 200 butterfly with Shane Brett leading a 1-2-3 sweep with a top-time of 1:50.77. Zach Pear took runner-up at 1:51.38 and Drew May finished in third place at 1:51.41. The fastest of the afternoon belonged to Kevin Frifeldt who clocked in with a winning time of 20.41 in the 50 freestyle, just ahead of Mark Gullick at 20.89. Frifeldt returned in the 100 freestyle for back-to-back wins on the afternoon with a time of 45.49.

Michal Zyla also was double-event winner on the day with a triumph in the 200 backstroke at 1:48.22, followed by Cole Stevens with a runner-up time of 1:50.45. The victory marks Zyla’s third consecutive in the event.

Nikita Bondarenko beseted teammate Tsau in his final 500 freestyle in Uris Pool with a winning time of 4:35.19. Tsau clocked in with a second-place time of 4:36.94. Terry Licaptured his third-consecutive 100 butterfly victory with a near pool-record time of 49.82. The final individual event of the day went to Jae Park who led all swimmers in the 200 I.M. with a time of 1:51.62.
