The Columbia women’s swimming and diving team, winner of the 2013-14 Ivy League Dual Meet crown, traveled to New Haven to confront the Yale Bulldogs in their home pool. Yale came away with the victory, 193-107. Full results here.
Defending Ivy League champion Lilybet MacRae won both diving events, scoring 306.90 in 3-meter and 299.85 in 1-meter. The swimming began with a Columbia victory in the 200 medley relay. Gabrielle Toback (26.51), Jennifer Shahar (28.23), Christina Ray (24.30), and Katie O’Rourke (23.78) came in at 1:42.82 ahead of Yale’s Heidi Vanderwel (26.57), Paulina Kaminski (29.02), Maddy Zimmerman (24.83), and Kina Zhou (22.91).
USA National teamer and Bulldog Eva Fabian won both distance events, clocking in at 10:00.82 in the 1000 and at 4:55.56 in the 500. The 1000, and the following 200 free, both provided the Bulldogs with 1-2-3 sweeps. Zhou led her teammates Danielle Liu (1:51.10) and Michelle Chintanaphol (1:52.62) in the 200 free with 1:50.02.
Yale freshman Vanderwel won the 100 back in 56.00 over Columbia’s Toback (56.66). Her classmate Kaminski went 1:03.92 in the 100 breast to just touch out the Lions’ Shahar (1:04.01). Yale’s Isla Hutchinson-Maddox and Sydney Hirschi went 1-2 in the 200 fly, finishing in 2:00.37 and 2:02.15, respectively. Columbia’s Kristine Ng was third with 2:02.42.
Zhou added to her 200 free victory with wins in both the 50 (23.45) and 100 free (51.70). Both were very tight races; Columbia’s Ray was only .12 behind in the 100, and .25 back in the 50. Chintanaphol came up with the win in the 200 back; she touched in 2:02.05.
Columbia won two very tight races when Ng edged Kaminski for a 2:18.60-2:18.87 victory in the 200 breast and Ray beat Zimmerman 55.35-55.55 in the 100 fly. But in the 200 IM, Yale had the upper hand with a 2:06.07-2:06.14 win going to Liu over Columbia’s Ng. The Bulldogs’ Emma Smith (2:06.62) was third.
Yale sealed the deal with a 3:28.99 victory in the 400 free relay. Chintanaphol (52.77), Mackenzie Franklin (52.77), Hirschi (52.25), and Anna Wujciak (51.20) contributed to the Bulldogs’ win.
