Two big high school meets took place in Ohio this weekend. We covered the 2016 Ohio Southwest Classic here, but a lot of fast swims also went down in Canton, at the 2016 Ohio Northeast Classic.
On the women’s side, the Columbus School for Girls just edged out Hoover High School in the team standings, winning 211 points to Hoover’s 207. The St. Charles boys, also from Columbus, won their meet with 278 points to second-place Brecksville-Broadview Heights’s 253.
Girls’ Meet
The Columbus School for Girls took three individual wins. The first came from junior Miranda Donley in the 50 free, which she won by almost a second in 22.99. She also took the win in the 100 fly, clocking 55.57. Columbus freshman McKayla Moffat won the 100 free in 51.67.
CSG also swept the free relays. Their 200 free relay team of Moffat, Alicia Donley, Annie Moosavian, and Miranda Donley edged out Hoover with 1:36.19. The CSG400 free team of Miranda Donley, Moosavian, Eleanor Smith, and Moffat finished in 3:30.33, four seconds ahead of Shaker Heights Hathaway’s 3:34.12.
The other relay went to Hoover, whose team of Caitlyn Cronin, Kate Lochridge, Annie Lochridge, and Parker Timken finished in 1:48.25, just outtouching Dublin Jerome’s 1:48.42.
Rocky River senior Lauren Devorace took the 200 free, edging out Moffat with a 1:53.55. Moffat swam a 1:53.81.
The 100 breast was another close race. Walsh Jesuit’s Hanna Gresser battled Massillon Jackson’s Leanna Myers. Gresser went out in a 30.45, and, although Myers came back fast in the final 50, she wasn’t able to catch her. Gresser took the win in 1:04.46, and Myers took second in 1:04.53.
Worthington Christian’s Becca Knapper won the 500 free in 5:05.05.
Medina Highland sophomore Ashley Mennenga won the 100 back in 56.61.
The 200 IM win went to sophomore Rachel Peroni of Olentangy Liberty High School in 2:07.39.
Nikki Watters, a junior from New Albany, won the 1-meter diving event with 475.65 points.
Boys’ Meet
The St. Charles boys won two individual events and two relays. Nicholas Ward took the 50 free in 20.75, just outswimming Green’s Dominic Poletta‘s 20.90. Hannes Kabelka, Ward’s teammate, took the 200 free in 1:44.72.
The St. Charles 200 free relay team of Kabelkia, Derek Nguyen, Ward, and Ben Sugar edged out Brecksville-Broadview Heights’s 1:25.12 with 1:24.88. Their 200 medley teams swept first and second, with Ward, Michael Gutman, Nicholas Eramo, and Sugar finishing first in 1:35.39.
Brecksville-Broadview Heights won three individual events and one relay. Sophomore David Madej won the 100 free in 45.78 and the 100 back in 50.86. The 100 fly went to Mark Krusinski, who outswam Strongsville’s DJ Arslanian 50.34 to 50.63.
The Brecksville-Broadview Heights 400 free relay team of Krusinski, Matt Martin, Michael Lynch, and Madej destroyed the field in the 400 free relay with 3:08.20. St. Charles’s second-place swim was 3:15.20.
Jason Quinn of Chagrin Falls, a Virginia commit, took the 500 free in 4:36.89. He grabbed another win in the 200 IM, outswimming the field by over five seconds with 1:53.72.
The 100 breast went to Jason Mathews, a Pickerington North sophomore, who finished in 57.54.
Cameron Thatcher won the 1-meter diving event with 541.65 points.
