Rochester, Mich. –The Oakland men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams finished out the regular season on a high note as the Golden Grizzlies defeated Cleveland State 190-109 on the men’s side, and 193-106 in women’s competition.

The Golden Grizzlies honored 10 seniors prior to Saturday’s competition.

Senior Katie Colwell swam to three first place finishes in the 200 medley relay (1:43.75) with teammates Grace ShinskeSydney McDowell, and Julia Cook, 100 free (51.78) and 50 free (23.73). Colwell also recorded a second place finish in the 400 free relay (3:32.74), with fellow seniors Shinske, Kirstyn Abbasse and Sara Heines.

In his regular season finale, Micah DeJonge tallied two first place finishes of his own on the 500 Free (4:40.74) and 1000 free (9:41.12).

The men’s and women’s teams racked up a combined 21 first place finishes in addition to a strong showing in diving with two first place finishes.

Jordan Smith placed first in 1-meter with a score of 308.02, the only diver to break the 300-mark in 1-meter competition. On the women’s side, Bernie Turchi placed first in the 1-meter with a score of 249.67. Senior Angelique Wise placed second in 1-meter competition, scoring 247.65.

Oakland will serve as the host of the 2020 Horizon League Championships from Feb. 19-22 at the Oakland Aquatic Center. Tickets are now available to purchase by calling the Oakland Athletics Ticket Office at (248) 370-4000.

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. – The Cleveland State University men’s and women’s swimming & diving teams dropped their final road duals of the regular season at Oakland Saturday afternoon inside the Oakland Aquatic Center.

The CSU men dropped a 193-106 decision while the Oakland women were victorious by a 190-109 margin.

“We truly showed up this weekend, on the road in Big Ten country and in the pool where our conference meet will be held, and swam and dove for our family,” head coach Hannah Burandt said. “This weekend, in my eyes, we won something we’ve been working for all season.”

The CSU women ended the meet with a bang as they won the 400 freestyle relay with a huge comeback. Senior Lauren Frank, freshman Rachel Contich and seniors Gabriella Marinelli and Madi Jaszcz touched the wall first in 3:32.65. The Vikings trailed by over two seconds entering the final leg, but Jaszcz posted a blazing split of 51.55 seconds to beat the Grizzlies by less than one-tenth of a second.

Contich and Jaszcz both won individual events in addition to swimming on the winning relay.

Contich finished first in a close 500 freestyle race as her winning time of 5:04.44 beat the runner-up by one-tenth of a second. Juniors Lexie Kostelnik and Sule van der Merwe helped CSU take three of the top four spots in the race as they were third (5:09.39) and fourth (5:15.04).

Contich also added a runner-up showing in the 200 freestyle as she touched the wall in 1:54.70, just ahead of Marinelli, who took third in 1:55.62.

Jaszcz led a 1-2 CSU showing in the 100 backstroke as she finished first in 58.19 seconds while classmate Chuchu Yang was second in 58.72 seconds. Jaszcz also was the top Viking in the 50 free, taking third in 24.97 seconds.

Junior Lexie Kostelnik and freshman Emma Kerro each added event wins for the Vikings.

Kostelnik won the 1000 free in 10:29.31 while swimming it for the second time in fewer than 24 hours.

Kerro won 3-meter diving with a NCAA Zone qualifying score of 280.35 points. She also finished third in the 1-meter event with 241.42 points.

Sophomore Stephanie Sipple contributed runner-up showings in both butterfly events. She finished the 200 in 2:10.40 and touched the wall in the 100 in 59.24 seconds.

Sophomore Agnes Bahr (200 IM – 2:11.60), junior Alana Cartwright (100 breaststroke – 1:06.19), junior Libby Smith (200 breaststroke – 2:27.16) and Marinelli (100 free – 53.46) each posted a third-place finish.

Freshman Abby Allison, Cartwright, Jaszcz and Marinelli took third in the 200 medley relay in 1:47.69.

Four Viking men won individual events Saturday.

Junior Matt Akers won 3-meter diving, as he joined Kerro with an NCAA qualifying score, by posting 323.92 points. His winning score was nearly 25 points ahead of the runner-up. Akers was the runner-up in 1-meter diving with 297.30 points.

Sophomore Jack Krusinski won one individual event and finished second in two others.

Krusinski claimed first in the 200 breaststroke in 2:02.68, winning the event by over four seconds. He added runner-up showings in the 100 breaststroke (56.20) and the 200 IM (1:52.86).

Seniors Jack MacDonald and Matthew Martin both notched a win along with a third-place finish.

MacDonald won the 100 freestyle in 45.59 seconds, out-touching the runner-up from Oakland by .06 seconds. He also took third in the 50 free (20.96), which was one spot behind classmate Dominic Poletta (20.83).

Martin won the 200 butterfly in 1:52.96 and took third in the 100 fly in 50.21 seconds.

Junior Dominik Niedzialek was the runner-up in the 100 back (49.95) and finished third in the 500 free (4:42.34).

Junior Timothy Kubacki finished second in the 200 back (1:49.76) and placed third in the 200 freestyle (1:42.05).

Niedzialek, Krusinski, senior DJ Arslanian and MacDonald took second in the 200 medley relay in 1:31.27.

Poletta, freshman Nathen Eberhardt, senior Tyler Stevenson and MacDonald were runners-up in the 400 freestyle relay in 3:03.23.

Cleveland State will close the regular season next Saturday, Feb. 1, as it hosts Kenyon at 10:30 a.m. The Vikings’ senior class will be honored with a mid-meet ceremony.
