Commonwealth Games Federation Formally Receives Durban’s Bid for 2022 Commonwealth Games

The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) has formally accepted the bid from Durban, South Africa to host the 2022 Commonwealth Games. While still noting that the bid must go through the standard processes to be accepted, the formal release by the CGF is indicative of enthusiasm toward the first-ever edition of this 84-year old event to be held on the African continent.

Durban was left as the lone bidders for the event after Edmonton withdrew earlier this year. The Gold Coast, Australia will host the 2018 edition of the multi-sport event designed for those countries with present or historical ties to the British crown.

Meanwhile, the country’s sports minister is treating the Commonwealth Games as a precursor to a future Olympic bid, which the country of South Africa has made no secret about its desire to host. Durban was the central host city of the 2010 World Cup.
