In Mesa, Nathan Adrian remained undefeated in the sprint freestyles on the 2016 Arena Pro Swim Series to maintain his men’s points lead, while Katie Ledecky continues to crush the competition on the women’s side.

Adrian’s lead is a fascinating one. In a series that usually favors versatile athletes who enter a wide range of events, Adrian has accumulated the most total points while scoring in just two events – the 50 and 100 freestyles.

That’s because Adrian is undefeated on the series this year, winning both sprint events in Minneapolis, Austin, Orlando and Mesa. That consistency has him leading Michael Phelps and Conor Dwyer by 5 and 8 points, respectively.

Ledecky’s domination isn’t much of a surprise on the women’s side, but it is noteworthy that she leads the field by 15 points – the equivalent of three event wins. Ledecky had the second-best showing in Mesa, trailing only a red-hot Maya Diradowho has scored 32 of her 40 points over the last two Pro Swim Series meets.

Last year’s champion Katinka Hosszumeanwhile, looks a longshot to repeat, sitting just 4th with 24 points. That’s 31 behind Ledecky. Hosszu scored just 6 in Mesa after a huge 18-point showing in Austin earlier this year.

ARENA PRO SWIM SERIES POINTS/MONEY SYSTEM

Series points and prize money are given out to the top 3 finishers in each Olympic-distance event. (The men’s 800 free, women’s 1500 free, and 50s of the non-free strokes do not earn points or money, despite being swum at some of the Pro Swim Series meets).

The awards are as follows:

  • 1st place = 5 points = $1000
  • 2nd place = 3 points = $600
  • 3rd place = 1 point = $200

At the end of the series, the top male and female finishers will earn a $10,000 bonus. The top finishers will also earn a 1-year lease of a BMW – but that lease award can only go to U.S. citizen. If the points winner is not a U.S. citizen, the lease will go to the highest eligible swimmer.

*As a reminder: the money listed in these rankings is “money earned,” not necessarily “money accepted.” Athletes maintaining their amateurism status are not necessarily accepting all the prize money they earned.

About Jared Anderson

Jared Anderson

Jared Anderson swam for nearly twenty years. Then, Jared Anderson stopped swimming and started writing about swimming. He's not sick of swimming yet. Swimming might be sick of him, though. Jared was a YMCA and high school swimmer in northern Minnesota, and spent his college years swimming breaststroke and occasionally pretending …
