Convicted Former Swim Coach Jon Beber Sentenced To 42 Years In Prison

After his conviction in April, former Boulder swim coach Jon Beber was sentenced to 42 years to life in prison for sexually abusing three teenage girls on July 19.

Beber, 54, was found guilty of two counts of “sexual assault of a child by a person in a position of trust – pattern of abuse” and one count of “sexual assault on a child by one in a position of trust” three months ago, two of the victims being younger than 15 and the third being between 15 and 18.

The 20th Judicial District Attorney’s Office in Boulder County said three victims came forward in 2022, leading to his initial arrest in July of that year.

On Friday, Beber was sentenced to 18 years to life in prison for each count of “sexual assault on a child by one in a position of trust – pattern of abuse” and six years for “sexual assault on a child by one in a position of trust.” The prison terms will run consecutively, bringing the sentence to 42 years to life in prison.

He was also sentenced to 20 years to life of parole for each count of “sexual assault on a child by one in a position of trust – pattern of abuse.”

“This lengthy prison sentence is the right outcome,” District Attorney Michael Dougherty said in a statement.

“As the judge noted, this type of case is every parent’s worst nightmare. Parents drop kids off for practice or school and hope that the adults in charge are not abusing their position of trust. This defendant did exactly that, for years. It is only because of the victims’ courage and perseverance that we were able to bring charges all these years later and secure justice for them and their families.”

Beber coached Boulder Swimming, a competitive club, from 1997 until early 2002 before resigning and leaving Colorado when abuse allegations began to surface. He went on to coach swim teams in Albany, New York, Florida and Atlanta, spending time coaching Dynamo Swim Club during his time in the latter.

I hope this conviction gives great pause to any coach who thinks abuse of a child is acceptable. This is essentially a death sentence for this guy.
