Women’s Recap
VESTAL, N.Y. – The Cornell women’s swimming and diving team put together a dominant performance against the Bearcats, winning 11 of the possible 13 events on its way to conquering Binghamton, 145-93, on Sunday afternoon at the Patricia A. Saunders Aquatic Center.
With the victory, the Big Red improves to 3-6 (1-6 Ivy) on the season, while Binghamton falls to 4-7. To date, Cornell’s record against the Bearcats remains flawless, as the Big Red is now 16-0 all-time against Binghamton dating back to 1999-00.
Not only did Cornell win 11 events on Sunday en route to victory, but the Big Red claimed at least the top-two spots in seven different events, highlighted by a sweep in the 100 butterfly. Victoria Zhang headlined the 100 butterfly squad that went 1-2-3, winning the race in 58.63. Allison Chang (59.03) and Melissa Parker (59.55) followed in second and third, respectively.
The Big Red finished 1-2 in four other races, including the 100 backstroke, 500 and 1,650 freestyle, and 400 medley relay. Olivia Sutter was the top finisher in the 100 backstroke (1:00.32), Lexie Vanderloo touched the wall first in the 500 freestyle (5:11.25), and Allie Danko won the 1,650 freestyle (17:29.04). Cornell also claimed the top-two places in the 400 medley relay, with the winning team of Marie Williams, Chang, Anna Gruvberger, and Priscilla Wongso clocking in at 3:59.69.
The diving duo of Demetra Williams and Elise Jendritz followed suit, placing first and second, respectively, in both diving disciplines. D. Williams posted winning marks of 280.65 points in the 1-meter and 312.00 points in the 3-meter.
Joelle Ohr had herself a day, winning not one, but two, individual events. She won both the 50 freestyle (24.43) and 100 freestyle (52.59) to join D. Williams as a double-winner on Sunday. Gillian Caverly added a victory for the Big Red in the 200 IM (2:12.38).
Cornell’s meet against Binghamton wraps up the 2021-22 dual season for the Big Red. The Cornell divers will be in action next week when the Big Red hosts the Big Red Diving Invitational on Saturday, Feb. 5 at 1 p.m. at the Teagle Pool in Ithaca. Beyond that, Cornell has its sights set on the 2022 Ivy League Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships, slated for Feb. 16-19 in Cambridge, Mass.
Men’s Recap
VESTAL, N.Y. – The Cornell men’s swimming and diving team opened its 2021-22 dual season with a victory and capped it off in winning fashion as well, beating Binghamton, 153-90, on Sunday afternoon at the Patricia A. Saunders Aquatic Center.
The Big Red won nine of the possible 13 events en route to victory, remaining unbeaten against the Bearcats all-time with a perfect 16-0 record dating back to 1999-00. Just as impressive, Cornell handed Binghamton its first home loss of the season, dropping the Bearcats to 6-3 on the year and 4-1 at the Patricia A. Saunders Aquatic Center.
Cornell’s meet-wide success stemmed from dominance in the IM events, as the Big Red swept the podium in the 400 IM while winning the 200 IM as well. Ricardo Martinez headlined the 1-2-3 sweep in the 400 IM, winning the race in 4:06.53. Jack Valiquette (4:09.15) and Dominic Edwards (4:13.52) followed Martinez in second and third, respectively. Paige daCosta secured the Big Red win in the 200 IM, touching the wall first in 1:52.77.
The Big Red also claimed the top-two spots in two additional races on Sunday, including the 100 backstroke and 500 freestyle. Van Cates emerged victorious in the 100 backstroke (50.59), with Jacob Bass placing one spot behind in second (50.78). Joseph Gurski was the first to finish the 500 freestyle race (4:33.02), with Vlad Gilszmer finishing second in 4:39.77.
Cornell’s divers were just as successful, as the Big Red won both diving disciplines. Soodong Kim won the 1-meter competition with 287.40 points, while Jameson Crandell surpassed the 300-point mark in the 3-meter (324.23) on his way to victory.
Competing in a freestyle race much shorter than what he is accustomed to, no one could tell the difference, as Jake Lawson won the 100 freestyle with a time of 46.74. Sebastian Wolff also picked up a win for Cornell, clocking in first in the 100 butterfly (49.63).
The Big Red capped off its team win in style, as the group of Wolff, Lawson, Pearce Bailey, and Ian Mackey won the 200 freestyle relay in 1:24.02.
Cornell’s meet against Binghamton wraps up the 2021-22 dual season for the Big Red. VESTAL, N.Y. – The Binghamton swimming & diving teams took part in their second meet in as many days, holding their Senior Day Meet against Cornell on Sunday afternoon at the Saunders Aquatic Center. The Big Red swept the team results by recording a 145-94 victory on the women’s side as well as a 153-90 triumph in the men’s team scoring.
“Being able to have two meets this weekend and swim tired is real good preparation for the conference meet in two weeks,” head coach Jerry Cummiskey. “We will be competing four straight days and need to take care of ourselves and this was a good simulation. We took on a very good Cornell team and I am proud of how we competed today,”
The Bearcats turned in a pool record in the men’s 400 medley relay with a time of 3:20.64. The previous mark of 3:26.04 was set by the Bearcats back in 2010. Freshmen Keegan Chatham and Elijah Lanfear, sophomore Liam Murphy and senior Ryan Board were on the record-breaking quartet.
Board went on the win the men’s 100 breast (55.89) while Lanfear captured the 50 free (21.33). The Bearcats’ other event winner on the men’s side was sophomore George Kipshidze, who won the 200 free (1:42.06).
In the women’s meet, sophomore Marley Zimmerman won the 200 free (1:56.59) and anchored the first-place 200 free relay (1:40.13). The other members of the 200 free relay team included sophomores Molly Greeley and Madison Hoover as well as junior Alyssa Martin.
Zimmerman has now won six individual events in the past three dual meets. She has won the 200 free in all three meets.
The other event winner for Binghamton on the women’s side was sophomore Courtney Moane, who took top honors in the 100 breast (1:07.43). Moane completed the weekend with three individual victory in the two meets.
Prior to the meet, Binghamton held its annual Senior Day Ceremony. This years senior honorees included Board, Christopher Egan, Benjamin Beldner, Brian Harding, Nathan DeGuzman, Belen Marriaga, Amanda McGraw and Katie Schultz.
Binghamton now gears up for the America East Championships, which will be held Feb. 10-13 and be hosted by WPI.
