Cornell Rolls To Season-Opening Sweep of Binghamton

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Cornell women’s swimming and diving team started its 2023-24 season on the right foot, defeating Binghamton 129-105 on Friday night from Teagle Pool. Cornell picked up wins in eight events in the pool, including three 1-2 finishes.

The Big Red opened Friday’s meet with a 1-2 finish in the 200-Yard Medley Relay. Ming XuAmy WuEmilie Boisrenoult, and Priscilla Wongso took home the top spot with a 1:44.84, and Hojung YoonAudrey HoldenAnna Gruvberger, and Joelle Ohr finished second with a 1:47.14.

Cornell also notched a 1-2 finish in the 1000-Yard Freestyle, as Erin DeHollander (10:33.05) and Jungmin Yoon (10:42.92) picked up the top two spots for the Big Red.

Katherine Yee had a strong showing in her first meet for the Big Red, picking up victories in the 100-Yard Butterfly (57.36) and the 100-Yard IM (59.82).

The Big Red also shined in the freestyle races, as Ohr (24.17), Wongso (51.86), Kate Li (1:53.38), and Allie Danko (5:08.96) each picked up victories in the 50-Yard, 100-Yard, 200-Yard, and 500-Yard events respectively.

Cornell also had a 1-2-3 finish in the 1-Meter Dive, as Brooke AndrewsMorgan Ogata, and Elina Natarajan landed on the podium.

The Big Red’s win on Friday is also the 18th straight over the Bearcats, dating back to the 1999-2000 season.

Cornell will round out its opening weekend with a dual against St. Bonaventure on Saturday at Teagle Pool. Diving will begin at 11:00 a.m., followed by swimming at 2:00 p.m.

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Cornell men’s swimming and diving team opened its 2023-24 season with a 147-94 victory over the Binghamton Bearcats on Friday night from Teagle Pool. Cornell picked up victories in 10 of the 13 events held, including two podium sweeps and two 1-2 finishes.

The Big Red opened the meet with a 1-2 finish in the 200-Yard Medley Relay. The quartet of Logan HoltConnor BrownAndrew Lin, and Daniel Simoes took home the top spot with a 1:32.10. They were followed closely by Paige daCostaThatcher DowdyBlake Conway, and Pearce Bailey, who put together a 1:33.58.

Cornell also swept the podium in the 100-Yard Backstroke with Blake Conway (24.65), daCosta (50.69), and Logan Holt (51.34), and the 100-Yard Breaststroke, as freshmen Connor Brown (56.53) and Haihan Xu (56.88) grabbed the top two spots, followed by Thatcher Dowdy (57.78).

Sophomore Pietro Ubertalli also had a solid evening, winning the 100-Yard Freestyle (45.95) and the 200-Yard Freestyle (1:40.77).

Freshman Julian Correa also impressed in his first meet for the Big Red, as he won the 500-Yard Freestyle with a time of 4:44.38, almost a second ahead of Binghamton’s Liam Preston. Correa also clinched the 1000-Yard Freestyle with a 9:38.90, about 12 seconds ahead of teammate Xu. Reid Brophy was the other Big Red swimmer who picked up a victory, winning the 100-Yard IM with a 52.60.

Soodong Kim also swept the 1-Meter and 3-Meter diving events with 321.23 points.

With the win, Cornell improves to 18-0 all-time against the Bearcats and bested its five first-place finishes from a year ago.

UP NEXT 
Cornell will return to the pool on Saturday afternoon against the St. Bonaventure Bonnies from Teagle Pool. Diving will begin at 11:00 a.m., with swimming to follow at 2:00 p.m. The Big Red will also look to sweep both the Bearcats and Bonnies for the second consecutive season.

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Binghamton swimming & diving teams were swept by Cornell in a dual meet on Friday evening at Teagle Pool. The Bearcats were defeated 147-94 in the men’s meet as well as 129-105 in the women’s competition.

Junior Elijah Lanfear was the Bearcats lone double winner, sweeping both the men’s 50 free (20.88) and 100 fly (50.21).

On the women’s side, individual event winners included junior Lauren Kuzma in the 100 breast (2:06.11), sophomore Elizabeth Tirado in the three-meter diving competition (217.13) and fellow sophomore Olivia Philbrick in the 100 back (57.86).

Binghamton also swept both the men’s and women’s 400 free relays. The men’s quartet of sophomore Liam Preston, freshman Cullin Cole and seniors Henry Shemet and George Kipshidze clocked a time of 3:08.58. The women’s team of seniors Maddie HooverMolly Greeley and Marley Zimmerman recorded a time of 3:39.51.

The Bearcats return home on Saturday to face Canisius. The diving events start at 11:30 a.m. followed by the swimming events at 1 p.m.
