CoSIDA Announces D3 Academic All-American Honorees

On Tuesday, CoSIDA announced the D3 Academic All-American list, giving swimmers an impressive showing.

The Academic All-American of the Year award always goes to one man and one woman, and this year Margaret Guo of MIT took the honor for the women. Guo is a senior swimmer and an electrical engineering and computer science major. On the men’s side, senior fencer Glenn Balbus of Johns Hopkins won the prestigious award.

This year, the swimmers dominated the list of Academic All-Ameircans with 32 students earning the honor. Tennis represents the second most amount of athletes at  14, followed by wrestling at 7. In all divisions, the swimmers have the highest population on the list, but in D3 the gap is more noticeable, with swimmers representing more than double the amount of athletes as the second most popular sport does.

On the First Team list for the women, swimmers compile more than half of the honorees. Of those, all are multiple-time honorees except for Emma Paulson of St. Tomas who earned a 3.72 in Accounting. Second Team Academic All-Americans include first time honorees Emily Reale of Messiah who earned a perfect GPA of 4.0 in biochemistry, and Marcela Sanchez-Aizcorbe of Emory, earning a 3.88 in finance/political science.

On the men’s side, swimming also has a strong showing on the First Team list with championship D3 swimmers like Jack Lindell and Trevor Manz. Lindell, who is a junior at Dennison, earned a 3.45 GPA in biology. Manz, who swims for Kenyon, earned a 3.99 GPA in biochemistry. Manz is returning to the list, but this is Lindell’s first time being honored.

Out of the three swimmers who made the Third Team, all are first timers on the list. Hayes Burdette-Sapp of Emory and Tommy Thetford of Washington and Lee are among these three. Sapp is a junior who maintained a 3.61 GPA in physics/buiness, and Thetford a sophomore who held a GPA of 3.81 in mathematics.
