Melanie Costa took gold in the 50, 100, 200 and 400 freestyle at the Spanish University Championships that were held in Murcia from May 5th-6th.
Costa dominated all of the events winning the 50 in a time of 26.33, the 100 in a 56.10, the 200 in a 2:01.39 and the 400 in a 4:13.65.
She was not the only multiple event winner as Alan Cabello won the 200 IM (2:04.60), the 200 breaststroke (2:20.18) and the 200 backstroke (2:05.74). Jessica Vall Montero swept the breaststroke events winning the 50 in a time of 32.31, the 100 in a 1:11.48 and the 200 in a 2:31.37.
Duane Da Rocha‘s attempt to sweep the women’s backstroke was broken up by Mercedes Peris. Da Rocha took the 100 in a time of 1:02.20 and the 200 in a 2:15.27, but it was Peris who took gold in the 50 posting a time of 28.68. Peris also won the 50 butterfly in a time of 27.72.
Albert Puig won gold in the 100 butterfly (54.46) and the 100 freestyle (51.48), but was challenged by the 200 freestyle champion Victor Martin who finished in a time of 51.55. Marin took the 200 freestyle in a time of 1:51.34.
Marc Sanchez Torrens won the 400 IM (4:24.71) and the 400 freestyle (3:57.72) while Juan Miguel Rando won the 50 (26.25) and 100 backstroke (57.30) as well as the 50 butterfly (24.52).
Carla Campo took the women’s 100 (1:02.27) and 200 butterfly (2:15.51).
The University of Murcia won the team title with 772 points. Sevilla finished second with 671 followed by Valencia who collected a total of 570 points
Mireia Belmonte was entered in several events, but did not participate in the competition.
