GREELEY, Colo. – Wyoming women’s swimming and diving opened up the dual season with a 155-145 victory over the Northern Colorado Bears on Thursday afternoon.
“I think the meet went pretty well. We pulled it off 155-145,” head coach Dave Denniston said. “Our freshmen class really stepped up and swam great. Lainee Jones was a rock star on the freestyle events and Andrea Niemann won the 200 backstroke and did a nice job for us today. Overall, the freshmen class raced hard as well as the whole team.
“The divers scored points for us as well and Kyle (Bogner) continues to do a good job. I was happy with today. Saw some areas where we can improve and looking to get some speed, because they are obviously in great shape.”
The Cowgirls won seven of 16 events highlighted by wins in the freestyle, butterfly, backstroke and sweeps of both boards of diving. In the first win of the day for UW, freshman Lainee Jones took the 200-yard freestyle with time of 1:54.47. That was followed by a one, two, three finish in the 100-yard backstroke. Ebeling’s Thoughts
“I’m excited about the way our girls stepped up tonight. Our goals coming into the meet were to race with passion and be the most spirited team on deck. We accomplished both of these and had a lot of fun. Wyoming is a very strong team and we fought hard all the way until the end of the meet. We have a great group of freshmen who are going to continue improving and I’m looking forward to an exciting year.”
