NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — George Mason’s Steven Craig and La Salle’s CJ Gimpel were named the Atlantic 10 Conference Men’s Swimming and Diving Co-Performers of the Week, the league announced on Tuesday. George Mason’s Sydney Fisher was named the Women’s Performer of the week. Also honored was St. Bonaventure’s Brittany Hart, who was named the Women’s Rookie of the Week. Awards were based off meet performances from Nov. 9– Nov. 15.
Craig, a sophomore from Raleigh, N.C., helped the Patriots beat La Salle 134-107 in a conference dual meet at the Mason Aquatics and Fitness Center. He notched three wins, grabbing victories in the 500-yd freestyle (4:41.52), 1000-yd freestyle (9:36.21) and 200-yd IM (1:54.79). George Mason captured first-place finishes in seven of the 13 events.
Gimpel, a senior from Chalfont, Pa., qualified for NCAA Zone A Diving Championships after winning the one-meter dives with a score of 315.60. He also posted a score of 288.98 in the three-meter dives, finishing in second place and helping the Explorers finish 1-3 in the event. It is the second year in a row that he has qualified for zones.
Fisher, a junior from Richmond, Va., had three first-place finishes for George Mason in a 149-94 win over the Explorers. Individually, she won the 50-yd freestyle (23.46) and 100-yd freestyle (52.33), while helping the 400-yd medley relay team win with a time of 3:54.25. The Patriots were able to win 10 of the 13 events in the meet, including two sweeps.
Hart, a freshman from Ellwood City, Pa., won her first collegiate event by scoring a 220.57 in the one-meter dives in a 156-83 win against Canisius. She finished second in the three-meter dives with a score of 218.70, just 2.1 points shy of first place.
