En route to winning gold tonight at the 2016 European Championships, Hungary’s Laszlo Cseh came dangerously close to breaking his own European Record from 2008. With a time tonight of 1:52.91, Cseh settled for a new meet record and new world #1, while also beating out the 1:52.94 mark rival American Michael Phelps scored last year at the U.S. Summer Nationals.

But for the top echelons of our sport, even becoming just the 2nd swimmer ever to score a 1:52-point time twice in a career isn’t good enough.

Of his performance tonight, Cseh said post-race, “I wanted to break my European record from 2008, I lacked some minor things to achieve that but it’s all fine as I know I am far away from my peak. If I arrived to Rio in this shape I would be utterly disappointed.”

Look out, Rio!

MEN’S 200 BUTTERFLY – FINAL

  • Laszlo Cseh (HUN) – 1:52.91, *Championship Record
  • Viktor Bromer (DEN) – 1:55.35
  • Tamas Kenderesi (HUN) – 1:55.39

Hungary is having quite the night, as the nation reaps yet another European Championship title. Breaking the 4th championship record of this finals session was Laszlo Csehthe reigning World Champion and now age-defying master of the 200m butterfly event.

After scorching a 1:54.29 last night in semi’s, Cseh proved once again that old-man speed never goes out of style, as the 31-year old rocked a monster 1:52.91 to win the event tonight by well over 2 seconds. His performance crushed the 1:53.48 he registered for the win in Kazan last summer and now placed him well ahead of the rest of the world in the overall rankings this season.

I think the gold medal Time would be between the world record and Olympic record..
Don’t think that Wr set in Rome is going down..
Feel the same about 100 fly..WR remains intact Olympic record goes down..

I really hope Cseh or Phelps wins in Rio, cause I just can’t stand Le Clos.

Question for the group- do you you think Phelps will be fully tapered for trials? Do you think Phelps was fully tapered at Nationals last year?

Won’t there be heats, semis, and finals in the 200m fly at Rio? The winner will have to have endurance and be used to swimming three races in two days. As much as I would like Phelps to go out with a gold, I want Cseh to win a gold more than I do Phelps.

Hey GOLD MEDAL MEL STEWART… earlier this year you predicted Cseh would not medal in the Fly in Rio, do you still feel that way?
