CWPA Releases Men’s Varsity Week 8 Polls

BRIDGEPORT, Pa. — The University of California-Los Angeles, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges and Brown University retain the No. 1 positions as the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) releases the 2015 Men’s Varsity Week 8/October 28 National Top 20, Division III Top 10 and Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Top 10 Polls.

The undisputed top team in the land through the first eight weeks of competition during the 2015 Men’s Varsity season, the Bruins are once again a unanimous top selection.  Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, which captured the Division III title back at the Gary Troyer Memorial Tournament via a 16-14 victory over then No. 1 Whittier College, remains at No. 1 in the Division III rankings.

In the CWPA Top 10 league poll, the Bears of Brown University withstand a charge up the rankings from Harvard University and Princeton University to maintain the top position on the East Coast.

Voted on by a panel of coaches from the CWPA, Western Water Polo Association (WWPA), MPSF, Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), the polls will be compiled and released on Wednesday during each week of the season through the week following the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Championship.

2015 Men’s Varsity National Top 20 (Week 8/October 28)

The 2014 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Champion Bruins of theUniversity of California-Los Angeles maintain the No. 1 position in the 2015 Week 8/October 28 National Top 20 Poll .

Similar to the Week 1, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 Polls, the Bruins (100 points) are once again a consensus top pick after tallying 99 points in the Week 2 balloting.

For the third week in a row, change comes to the Top Five as the University of the Pacific (93 points) leapfrogs the University of Southern California and the University of California to take over at No. 2 on the strength of a victory over the Trojans last week. USC (90 points) and California (87 points) slip to No. 3 and 4, while the No. 5-to-9 positions remain unchanged with Stanford University (80 points), the University of California-Santa Barbara (75 points), the University of California-Irvine (70 points), Long Beach State University (65 points) and Pepperdine University (60 points) hold on inside the Top 10 for another week.

The No. 10-to-13 positions are a series of ties as the University of California-Davis (46 points) and Princeton University(46 points) rate as equals at No. 10 to break up an All-California Top 10, while Brown University (42 points) and Harvard University (42 points) move into a tie at No. 12.  The ranking marks the highest position ever achieved by a Harvard men’s and/or women’s water polo team in the history of the sport.

Bucknell University (33 points) and Loyola Marymount University (30 points) adjust to No. 14 and 15, with Santa Clara University (29 points), the University of California-San Diego (21 points), the United States Air Force Academy (17 points), California Baptist University (9 points) and the United States Naval Academy (4 points) completing the Top 20.

2015 Men’s Varsity Division III Top 10 (Week 8/October 28)

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges (98 points) maintains top billing at No. 1 in the Week 8/October 28 National Division III Top 10 Poll.

Whittier College (94 points) follows to remain at No. 2 for another week, while Chapman University (87 points) takes over at No. 3.  Johns Hopkins University (81 points) remains at No. 4, while the duo of Pomona-Pitzer Colleges (80 points) and the University of Redlands(80 points) are tied at No. 5.

California Lutheran University (70 points), the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (68 points), the University of La Verne (61 points) and Washington & Jefferson College (34 points) complete the Division III rankings.

Occidental College (11 points) and Connecticut College (11 points) also received votes.

2015 Men’s Varsity CWPA Top 10 (Week 8/October 28)

Following a tumultuous week in the league’s Southern Division-East Region two weeks ago, the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Northern Division teams get in on the act this week as defending league champion Brown University barely retains honors as the top team on the Esat Coast according to the Week 8/October 28 Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Top 10 Poll.

The Bears remain on top of the league standings by the slimmest of margins as bothHarvard University (94 points) and Princeton University (93 points) are within two points of equaling Brown for the top spot in the league rankings.

Princeton and Brown, which have traded the No. 1 position in the CWPA Top 10 during the course of the season, receive a new rival as Harvard rolled over Santa Clara University (7-2 W), San Jose State University (10-8 W), Fresno Pacific University (13-9 W) and nationally ranked the United States Air Force Academy (9-8 W) and the University of California-Davis (10-9 OT W) to stake a claim as a contender for upcoming Northern and CWPA Championships.

Bucknell University (88 points) drops back to No. 4, with CWPA Division III Champion Johns Hopkins University (77 points) inching up one spot to take over at No. 5.

St. Francis College Brooklyn (75 points) slips to No. 6 with the United States Naval Academy (70 points) remaining at No. 7.

Fordham University (67 points) and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (61 points) rate at No. 8 and 9, respectively, with Iona College (22 points) and George Washington University (22 points) completing the Top 10 in a tie for the final position.
