Cypress Fairbanks’ Braxton Marion Commits to Swim for Harvard

Braxton Marion, who hails from Houston, Texas, celebrated signing day in February at Cypress Ranch High School and was fêted by his school for his commitment to Harvard University’s class of 2022.*

Marion specializes in free, back, and fly, and swims year-round for Cypress Fairbanks Swim Club. He contributed runner-up performances in both the 100 fly and 100 back as the Cypress Ranch boys’ team won the District 17-6A Swimming and Diving Championships in January the CFISD Natatorium. He also led off the second-place medley relay (50 back PB of 24.75) and swam the third leg of the runner-up 400 free relay. He also improved his best times in the 100/200 free and 200 back during his senior year season.

In club swimming, Braxton competed in the 100 free, 100/200 back, and 100 fly at College Station Sectionals this spring. Last summer he improved his LCM times in the 50/200/400 free and 100/200 back.

Best SCY times:

  • 100 fly – 52.93
  • 200 fly – 1:57.34
  • 100 back – 53.58
  • 200 back – 1:57.72
  • 100 free – 49.09
  • 200 free – 1:46.88
  • 500 free – 4:48.36

Marion will join fellow Harvard class of 2022 commits Sam Laurich, Jake Johnson, Ryan Linnihan, Simon Lamar, and Umitcan Gures.

*Technically, there is no “signing” per se for an Ivy League school. The conference does not belong to the National Letter of Intent program. Most athletes, however, apply during the Early period and receive their letters of admission in December, so they participate in their schools’ NLI ceremonies in the spring.

If you have a commitment to report, please send an email with a photo (landscape, or horizontal, looks best) and a quote to [email protected].

I had a 49 point 100fly, 45 point 100 free and a 1:48 2fly and still got told by the Harvard coach I wasn’t good enough to be recruited 🙁

His times don’t make sense to be on the team.

If his academic index is high enough to help balance the addition of a much faster, but less academically strong athlete, it sure does make sense.

The average swimswam reader can’t think very well. It does make sense

Lol you’re kidding yourself if you think you have to be smart to be recruited by Harvard. They recruit kids for speed and kids for smarts to get a balanced team. This goes for all ivies.

Let’s put it this way: You have to be a lot smarter to swim for Harvard than to make comments on this site.

Bet you most of the athletes on Harvards team had grades you can never achieve

Except for DEAN FARRIS, who is not only the fastest swimmer on the planet, but also the smartest.

He probably was accepted to Harvard as a normal student and will be a walk-on for the team which is why his announcement comes at a time when General applicants have all been accepted. His times probably weren’t fast enough to be “recruited” and get support, but they are very solid times for an obviously smart kid and are definitely good enough to be part of the team. But keep in mind this is pure speculation

If he is in the class of 2022 (i.e. a high school senior this year) hasn’t Harvard at this point already offered him admission as to all other students so he can just accept admission and remove the need for any of this asterisk/Ivy league process business?
