Dana Vollmer Only Training Singles for World Trials, Video Interview

2013 Charlotte Ultraswim, Women’s 100 Butterfly as reported by SwimSwam contributor Mitch Bowmile

The woman’s 100m fly final featured one of the greatest duals of the meet between Claire Donahue and Dana Vollmer. World record holder Vollmer pushed the second 50 to create a decent lead for herself touching the wall in 58.24  followed by Donahue in 58.83.

2013 Charlotte Ultraswim, Women’s 100 Freestyle as reported by Morgan Priestley:

Dana Vollmer continued her solid weekend, touching first in 55.69.  Although she missed the Olympic team in the 400 freestyle relay, Vollmer has been a great contributor for the U.S. women internationally on relays for a number of years.  Shannon Vreeland (55.78), Jessica Hardy (55.86), and Megan Romano (55.96) also cracked 56 seconds.

We should all respect that post grad swimmers need to manage the odometer in a four year cycle. Vollmer will train deleriously in the 16-20 months ahead of 2016 Trials As will all Olympic hopefulls that ate post grad. It is not tenable to slog 13 workouts and 70K yards a week for four years to swim 100 meter events in 2016.

Exactly.

Vollmer (and.or Teri) is smart. This year is the perfect time in the 4 year cycle to take some pedal off, to experiment with training, to experience variety.

Also, who cares about another world championships medal if you can win olympics gold. Just ask Van Almsick.

Thoughts and prayers to everyone affected by a massive tornado which hit Granbury, TX, Vollmer’s hometown.

I think she will definitely medal at worlds, but I don’t know if she’ll win gold. I see her going only as low as 56 mid which could be enough to win, but you never know with people like Coutts and Sjoestrom waiting in the wings.

Coutts will not win, she has 200 IM at the same night.

Sjoestrom COULD win, IF she does not swim all 50/100/200 free and 100 fly as well as relays.

Alicia Coutts will win if Miss Vollmer isn’t able to swim 56.50, 56 low. And the schedule isn’t a problem for her and the 100 fly. The 100 fly final is before the 200 IM final on day 2.

But that means Coutts will also have swum 100 fly AND 200 IM prelims and semis AND 4×100 free prelims or final the previous day.

She is an amazing swimmer, and typical of Teri’s swimmers, not afraid to try out different or wholesome approach to improve her swimming.

Great swimmer, great career and unfortunately a little too underrated in my opinion.
Mr Stewart, you are the specialist but I think you are too optimistic about Dana Vollmer this year. Yes she can swim fast but my question is : will she be able to do it 3 times at the world championships with the best performance in final? She has trained much less since London so I have a little doubt about her capacity to multiple efforts. But I wish her the best for Barcelona. USA badly needs her in the 100 fly and in the medley relay.

Yes Mel , she proably took the best decision by following singles … 5 weeks from now , we will know where exactly she is .

I’m with Mel. Seems like we frequently see a lot of elite swimmers continue to turn in excellent times for a while when they’re on something of a reduced training schedule.

And then those same swimmers seem to regress 9-15 months after the lighter training schedule. So I wouldn’t be surprised to see a sub-par season from her in 2014. And in the greater scheme of things, while Pan Pacs is a very nice meet, it’s not as important of a taper meet as you’ll get in 2015 and 2016. So plenty of time to ease back a little here and cut back on long term wear and tear on the body so someone who has been elite since… Read more »
