High school junior Daniel Diehl, who we ranked as the #1 recruit in the high school class of 2024 and who has set a slew of National Age Group records, has verbally committed to the NC State Wolfpack.
After my 4th visit to NC state, I’m proud to announce my verbal commitment. Thanks to my family, coach and everyone at NC state.
Diehl, who swims for the Cumberland YMCA in Maryland, burst onto the national stage in late 2020, when he went 1:36.75 to set the 13-14 National Age Group record. That kicked off a run of National Age Group records that’s continued through this past December, when he took down Ryan Murphy’s 17-18 NAG record in the 100 back (LCM).

Diehl trains with a pretty small group on his club team, and as of last fall, only practices five or six times a week. A year and a half from now, he’ll make the jump to NC State, which has a great decade under head coach Braden Holloway.
Right now, it looks like Diehl’s ideal college lineup may be the 200 IM, 100 back, and 200 back, but it wouldn’t be surprising to see him end up swimming the 50 and 100 free either. Either way, Diehl should have plenty of training partners, including current college sophomores Aiden Hayes (sprint free/fly), Arsenio Bustos (IM), David Curtiss (sprint free), freshmen Quintin McCarty (sprint free/back), Drew Salls (sprint free), and high school seniors Hudson Williams (free/back/IM) and Chase Mueller (back/free), among plenty of others.
Diehl’s choice of NC State for college doesn’t come as a huge surprise. Back in the fall, he listed NC State as one of several schools on his short list, and his social media posts have regularly featured him hanging out with current Wolfpack team members at major meets.
Diehl is set to join fellow 2024 commits #11 Nolan Dunkel, #12 Matthew Marsteiner, Simon Bermudez, and Brasen Walker in Raleigh in the fall of 2024.

Objectively, I disagree with all of the people saying “just to get 4th.” It’s only a matter of time before Braden wins a team championship. He’s not only a great coach, but he has a fantastic coaching staff. On the men’s side, he is the one to watch.
Agreed. With the young talent they have on roster and incoming recruits, I’d pick them as favorites in 2025. ASU who knows, and Cal is already close and has a knack for bringing in key transfers and internationals so that could change.

If I remember correctly he mentioned his intention not to attend NC State on his Instagram during Q&A back in January and rather to stay and study in Poland.
