Laura Stephens and Daniel Jervis became the two newest qualifiers for the British contingent at the 2023 World Championships. They both swam under the respective qualifying standards for their events and placed first in the A final, satisfying the qualification criteria.
In the women’s 200 butterfly, Stephens swam a new best time of 2:06.62, getting under the 2:07.00 barrier for the first time. She cleared the World Champs cut of 2:06.81 by just 0.19 seconds. Stephens swam her way to a semi-final in this event at Worlds last year, hitting a 2:08.47 for 10th place overall. She also raced the 100 butterfly in Budapest in 2022 and placed 15th with a 58.71.
Stephens won the event by around half a second as Emily Large and Scottish record-break Keanna Macinnes came in with a 2:07.33 and 2:08.05, respectively.
In the men’s 1500 freestyle, Daniel Jervis delivered a dominant event-winning swim of 14:46.95 to miss the British record in this event by exactly one second. He is now within striking distance of David Davies‘ 14:45.95 record from almost 20 years ago in 2004.
Jervis’ time got under the World Championships cut of 14:48.53, meaning he’ll get a chance to race this event on the world stage again this year. Jervis finished 7th in the event at the 2022 World Championships with a 14:48.86. Tobias Robinson was second overall with a 15:04.76 and Nathan Hughes rounded out the podium with a 15:29.63.
The other three event-winners on day three of the 2023 British Championships all neared qualification for Worlds but they each fell a bit short. Anna Hopkin swam a 24.51 to win the 50 freestyle, missing the 24.38 cut and Charlie Hutchison was a 4:17.89 in the 400 IM while the standard is a 4:09.19. In the final event of the night, Lewis Burras hit a 47.99 to come within 0.30 seconds of the 47.60 he needed to automatically qualify.
While few have hit the qualification times after three days of racing, many names will be retroactively added by the selection committee once the meet is over.

British Swimming have just changed the selection policy, instead of doing the 8 discretionary picks they’ve now given themselves unlimited picks, much more sensible. Still think lowering the qualifying standard helps this far more
Jervis is on the verge of his LCM international breakout.
Think his breakout would’ve happened last year by winning Commonwealth Games Gold, but unfortunately he had to pull out after getting Covid.
Is there any country that has as stringent A-cuts at GB (Japan went a little softer this year, probably because the WC is on home soil – they chose to go with the 2024 OQT).
I think you should make a separate list for all the swimmers that achieved the secondary standard too, as they are all very likely to make the team too.
