Daniel Krueger Hits Lifetime Best in 50 Free to Close Southern Sectionals

Evie Pfiefer started off the final day of racing in Austin by claiming the win in the women’s 200 IM. The recent Texas graduate narrowly beat out teammate Kelly Pash to finish in 2:13.18, just ahead of Pash’s 2:13.33.

For the men, it was the Foster brothers who dominated the race as Carson Foster took first and Jake Foster was second. Carson continued his trend of besting his times from Olympic Trials from earlier this year, as he finished in 1:57.20, just over half a second faster than his performance in the race from Trials. At that meet in finals, he finished in 1:57.99 for fourth, while his 1:57.20 would have moved him up to third, just one spot shy of Olympic qualifying. The elder Foster brother, Jake, also improved upon his Trials time in the race, finishing in 1:59.12. At Trials, that swim would have been enough for Jake to earn a spot in the finals.

The final women’s event of the day, the 50 free, saw a pair of high school swimmers and pair of Texas Longhorns fighting it out for the top spots. Coming away with the fastest time of the four was Jada Scott, the 16-year old from Alamo Area Aquatic Association. Scott shaved .7 off of her best in the race to touch in 26.01. Tying for second was Kyanh Truong, who will join Duke this fall as a freshman, and Grace Cooper, who swims for Texas. The pair both touched in 26.05. Julia Cook of Texas took fourth in 26.13.

After his huge swim in the 100 free earlier in the weekend, Daniel Krueger had another big swim in the 50 free to close the meet out. While at Trials he took 35th in 22.75, yesterday he finished in 22.38. That swim would have moved him up to 14th in prelims, earning him a spot to race the event in the semifinals. The swim was also a huge lifetime best for the Longhorn, as his previous top performance was from May where he finished in 22.72.
