Danielle Hanus of the Newmarket Stingrays took down her own short course 100m backstroke Canadian age group record in prelims in order to take the top seed heading into finals.

Hanus dropped a 58.00 to take that top seed. With that performance she took 0.19 seconds off the age group mark she set last year at the inaugural Ontario Junior International.

Kathleen Dawson, who broke a Scottish national record last night in the 50m backstroke, was her closest competitor overall this morning. Dawson rocked a swift 58.45 at the touch to take the second seed overall.

Last night the two faced off in the 50m backstroke final where Dawson broke the record and went on to win the event in 26.76. Hanus ended up third overall in last night’s final behind both Dawson and Emma Ball of team Ontario.

Hanus also swam the 400m IM last night where she finished fourth overall in 4:41.88.

Hanus owns the Canadian age group record in the 15-17 category for the 100m backstroke, but has yet to claim the record in the 200m backstroke. She will be swimming that race Sunday night and is going into prelims as the sixth seed overall. The current record stands at 2:06.40.
