Daniil Pancerevas Sets Pair of National Age Records To Open Lithuanian Champs

2020 LITHUANIAN OPEN LC CHAMPIONSHIPS

The 2020 Lithuanian Open Long Course Championships kicked off Thursday from Klaipėda, with some well known names and some up and comers making an early impact on the meet.

Rewriting the country’s age group records on day one was 16-year-old Daniil Pancerevas, who took down the boys’ 16 & under marks in the 200 free and 50 fly in both prelims and finals.

In the 200 free, Pancerevas had set a new age record less than a week ago in a time trial, clocking 1:50.49, and then he took that time down to 1:50.03 in the prelims.

In the final it was more of the same, as Pancerevas put on a dominant showing to win the event in 1:49.40. Tomas Navikonis was the runner-up in 1:52.84.

In the 50 fly, Pancerevas broke Tadas Duskinas‘ age record of 25.03 with a 24.97 prelim swim, and then got it down to 24.62 in the final. That earned him second place overall, with Deividas Margevicius picking up the win in 23.68.

That swim marked a new best time for Margevicius, who had previously been 23.84. He now sits just one tenth outside of the national record, held by Duskinas (23.58), set in 2019.

Another age group record fell at the hands of 13-year-old Sylvia Statkevicius, who trains with the Etobicoke Swim Club in Canada.

Statkevicius won the women’s 200 free in a time of 2:06.82, lowering her own Lithuanian 14 & under age record set during the time trial in Klaipėda on December 12 (2:08.12). Prior to that swim, the record stood at 2:08.20 from Greta Gataveckaite in 2015.

Statkevicius followed that up by winning the 800 free in 9:24.31, just off her best of 9:23.99.
