There has been a great deal of excitement in and around Danish Swimming in the past year. With performances such as their sixth place finish at the World Short Course Championships, Rikkie Moeller Pedersen‘s world record, Jeanette Ottensen Gray‘s World Championships victory and Lotte Friis’ incredible results in the distance events in Barcelona Danish swimmers have open many people’s eyes both domestically and abroad.
Now with Herning hosting the European Short Course Championships one of the three major Danish newspapers has decided to give swimming a little more dedicated attention. Denmark’s oldest newspaper Berlingske, which was first published in 1749 and currently has a circulation of 103,000 copies on weekdays, will no longer lump swimming into their ‘other sports’ section, but will give the sport it’s own dedicated area on their website. Swimming is now one of the newspaper’s banner sports, which include other sports such as football, handball and tennis.
With only six weeks left before the European Short Course Championships the Danish Swimming Federation and competition organizers are continue to find was to attract attention to the event.
If only all the newspapers the world over would follow their example.
It’s perhaps hard to understand for Americans and others how amazing it is for our little country to get so much attention, so I hope you don’t get bored reading about us all the time 🙂 And thank you to SwimSwam for reporting on events over here, perhaps one day we can even get ordinary Danes to stop watching handball for 5 minutes and pay attention!

Back to swimming. I’m not jealous by the big attention from swimswam to Danish swimming. You deserve it. But one question. All your stars are girls. There’s no man at the top. How do you explain that?
