Daryna Zevina of the Ukraine just missed the world record in the women’s 200 back at the FINA World Cup in Chartres, clocking 1:59.35 for the gold medal and a new World Cup record. The swim missed Katinka Hosszu‘s world record of 1:59.23 by just 12 one-hundredths of a second, and makes her just the third woman to crack two minutes in the history of the event.
Here’s a comparison of Hosszu’s world record splits versus Zevina’s splits from today:

- Daryna Zevina, 2016 Chartrs World Cup: 28.93(30.69)(29.81)(29.92) – 1:59.35
As you can see, Hosszu swam her race much more aggressively, out over a full second ahead of Zevina at the 100m mark. Zevina back ended her race, coming home in an incredible 59.73 compared to Hosszu’s 1:00.87, just missing the record.
Hosszu was the first to do it at the 2014 Short Course World Championships, where she posted her record that still stands at 1:59.23. Australia’s Emily Seebohm joined her under two minutes going 1:59.49 at the Australian Short Course Championships in November of 2015, and Hosszu went under three more times in December.
Zevina’s previous best was her time of 2:00.81 from the Berlin World Cup stop back in 2013. This swim eclipses that mark as the new Ukrainian national record. She also broke Missy Franklin‘s World Cup record of 2:00.03, set way back in October of 2011. She moves past Seebohm, Franklin and Japan’s Shiho Sakai from 5th to 2nd on the all-time list.

Hosszu finished 2nd in the race in 2:01.80, and Seebohm was 3rd in 2:02.46. Incredibly, that was Hosszu’s sixth swim of the session.
Hosszu won silver in this event at the Olympics earlier this month, while both Zevina (t-9th) and Seebohm (12th) missed the final.
