In 2013 577 athletes from 39 nations attended the event. The organizers of the competition in 2017 are estimating that 850 swimmers from 40 countries will be participating.

The championships will be held in the Royal Arena, which is a new multi-functional facility that is set to open in the fall of 2016. The arena has been constructed to host world class events in sport, culture and music. The floor area is 35,000 square meters and will have the capacity to hold up to 12,500 spectators for sporting events.
