Sydney Golic comes from a family of athletes. You may have heard of her father, Mike Golic, who spent 9 years in the NFL with the Oilers, Eagles and Dolphins. He’s now the co-host of the country’s best sports radio show – Mike and Mike in the Morning.
The former Notre Dame great has already sent two sons – Jake and Mike Jr. – to play football for the Irish, but for Sydney that was not an option. So she instead turned to swimming, where she too will become a member of the Notre Dame athletic program when she signs her National Letter of Intent today.
Sydney has, as of late, emerged as a very good breaststroker, with bests of 1:03.9 in the 100 and 2:19.4 in the 200. When she was youngger, however, she leaned more towards backstroke (2:02.7 in the 200) and butterfly. Ultimately, given her natural athleticism and the versatility she’s shown throughout her career, I’d guess that she will develop into an IM’er in college. Currently, her bests there are 2:05.9 and 4:26.8, but those times should see huge improvements in the near-future.
Sydney trains with the West Hartford Aquatic Team in Connecticut, where ESPN’s campus is located.
With this move, perhaps swimming will garner a bit more attention on the Worldwide Leader in Sports. Maybe not, but it can’t hurt. It shows that swimmers and football players, though on some levels seeming to be sworn enemies, can coexist successfully. Find your local ESPN station and listen to Mike & Mike in the Morning tomorrow to see if Notre Dame swimming gets a shout out!
