Daughter of Olympic Medalist Tells Ellen DeGeneres Swimming Is Boring

December 24th, 2016 News, Video

Australian Olympian Justin Norris, who won an Olympic bronze medal in the 200 fly at the 2000 Sydney Games, has always loved swimming. His daughter Sabre Norris, an 11-year-old surfer and skateboarder, doesn’t have quite as much enthusiasm for the sport.

Norris has tried to encourage his daughter to pursue swimming in some ways. Sabre says she had to do a “gnarly list” of chores if she wants to go to surfing competitions, but won’t have to do any chores if she wants to swim. She drew a big laugh from the audience when she said her dad wants her to be a swimmer, but that she hates swimming and “swimming sucks.” She goes on to explain that swimming is just watching a line on the bottom of the pool, and that it’s just not fun.

Her swimmer genetics show through when she starts talking about food, however, for which she has a seemingly insatiable appetite. Sabre recently competed in a high-level surfing competition, and wanted to spend all of her prize money on donuts. When she found out her favorite donut shop was awarding her with free donuts, she talks about spending her money on a giant Hershey’s kiss she found when she made the trip to the U.S.

Check out the video of Sabre Norris’ hilarious interview on The Ellen Show below.

Great to see a father so actively involved in his daughter’s life. She is living a healthy lifestyle (albeit the sugar cravings). Great story.

Justin Norris, part of small select group who can say they have beaten Michael Phelps in the 200 Fly on the international stage. I believe Le Clos, Malchow (twice), Denys Sylantyev (Ukraine), and Anatoly Polyakov (Russia) are the only others.

I am not sure how much Grand Prix qualify as international stage, but he did lose to Wu Pang twice and also finished behind Clary and Marcin Cieslak once.

True, but I think DMACNCHEEZ meant major international champs: Olympics, World Championships and Pan Pacs (Phelps was beaten by Malchow in 2002 Pan Pacs).

US grand prix series do not count.

To elaborate my point: US Grand Prix series are domestic meets (and never billed as “international swimming meet”) that allow foreign swimmers to compete, it is not officially an “international meet”.
Many domestic meets in other countries (eg. state meets and grand prix meets in Australia) also allow foreign swimmers to participate, some countries’ olympics trials (Canada, GBR, etc) even do it, too, but that does not mean they’re international meets.

Swapped jackets with Justin at a meet in the late 90s … super humble.

She is just TOO adorable…….she has an elevated appreciation for a body of water…..perhaps she’s an open water swimmer and not a pool swimmer. There is no doubt that she’s a ????! ! Her parents must be so proud. It’s a real blessing to raise such a happy-go-lucky down to earth child. Obviously, her parents are doing a great job. Congratulations to Sabre and her family.

The most boring thing aboiut swimming is parents who try to live vicariously through their children’s athletic pursuits.

Except in this case her parent is an Olympics medalist who can factually say that he beat Michael Phelps in Olympics final.

What a cute, entertaining character she is. She’s ready for her own TV show. She can really shred on a surfboard too!

Swimming is cool once every 4 years for 7 days. Otherwise it is like watching paint dry or perhaps like watching grass grow.
