USA Swimming National Team Director Frank Busch has chosen Dave Salo as the head coach for the 2013 US women’s team that will head to Barcelona this summer, as Salo confirmed via email today. Assistant coaches will be named after the teams are selected.

Read about the men’s team coach here.

The World Championships will be held from July 28th-August 4th, with trials running just 5 days from June 25th-29th in Indianapolis.

Salo, the head coach at USC who works with a post-grad program under the moniker of the Trojan Swim Club, coached Ricky Berens, Eric Shanteau, Rebecca Soni, Hessica Hardy, Haley Anderson, and a slew of international Olympians to London. Of that group, Berens is now training in Austin under Eddie Reese, and neither Soni nor Shanteau has competed since the Games.

Hardy, on the other hand, has been an active competitor, including serving as a youth mentor on the annual trip to the World Cup. Anderson has also been actively completing her senior season for the collegiate squad, and could be selected either in open water or in the pool.

Salo has a few other swimmers who are within reach of making this year’s team, including a now-healthy Kasey Carlson, Jasmine Tosky, Andrea Kropp, and Kendyl Stewart.

While he is unlikely to have the meet’s biggest roster of athletes this summer, this could be a positive for the overall success of the team. Having fewer of their own athletes to focus on will help them give added attention to their role in managing the entire team and making relay decisions, for example.

Assistants are usually chosen, at least in part, on the basis of the number and level of athletes a coach has qualified for a given roster, and as such are named after the Trials meet.

Pretty sure it is like a two week commitment. I don’t think this is a full summer gig

So he won’t be coaching the Trojans this summer…
