David Marsh nominated for Person of the Year

NBC’s Charlotte network has announced five Charlotte residents are up for nomination for the network’s “Person of the Year” award and SwimMAC’s own CEO/Director of Coaching David Marsh is one of the five nominated.

The five nominees were selected by WCNC for having a positive impact on the Queen City during the 2012 year.

Marsh, who has been at the helm of SwimMAC since 2008, steered the club to an impressive 2012. There are many areas to highlight and each one is impressive in it’s own right. Please see an abbreviated list of 2012 SwimMAC accomplishments.

In addition to Marsh, former SwimMAC swimmer Ricky Berens is also nominated for the award. An item to note is in a town with numerous professional sports organizations, including the Carolina Panthers and Charlotte Bobcats, and two prominent NCAA Division I institutions, Davidson and UNC-Charlotte, Marsh and Berens are the only to sports figures to make the rather impressive list of five.

The other three nominees are Beverly Howard, Executive Director of Loaves & Fishes, Leon and Sandra Levine and Brenda Stevenson, Pastor of New Outreach Ministries.

Individuals may vote once per hour between now and 5 pm on Friday, Dec. 21.

The winner will be announced on Dec. 27.

2012 SwimMAC Highlights Include, but are not limited too:

Sending five SwimMAC athletes to compete in the 2012 London Olympics, more than swimmers from one club than any other club in the country. Those Olympians won six medals, three gold and three silver. Marsh himself was selected as a member of the men’s coaching staff for the games.

Capturing USA Swimming’s 2013 Club Excellence Title, the second in SwimMAC’s history and the second in as many years. The Club Excellence program recognizes clubs for their 18 & Under student-athlete performances during a given time period. For SwimMAC, the club had 27 athletes score points in 72 different events.

SwimMAC won two Junior National Championships, one in short course and the other in long course. These championship titles show the strength of Marsh and his staff in training the next group of up-and-coming Olympic hopefuls.

Having 19 student-athletes recognized as Scholastic All-Americans by USA Swimming.

SwimMAC continues to host easily one of the best swimming events in the USA, outside of Olympic Trials, as they welcome world-class athletes to the Queens City every may for the Charlotte UltraSwim presented by SwimMAC. This event brings in thousands of spectators, swimmers, media members and the like to watch swimming in an up-close and personal venue.
