This week, the 2022 Romanian Short Course Championships will take place from November 10 to 13, 2022. The biggest headliner of the meet is world record holder David Popovici, who will be racing in his first meet since the 2022 World Junior Championships in September, and his first short course meters competition since the 2021 Short Course World Championships.
Popovici is racing in his marquee events, the 100 and 200 free, as well as the 400 free—an event that he was set to swim long course at the 2022 European Championships but ended up scratching out of after prelims. In addition, he will also be racing two “off” events: the 100 fly and the 100 IM. Popovici does not have any recorded times in the 100 fly short course, although his long course personal best is a 58.18. He raced the 100 IM during the 2021 FINA World Cup series and holds a PB of 54.81 in that event.
Romanian Short Course Nationals serves as a tune-up meet for Popovici, who will be racing at the 2022 Short Course World Championships next month.
Another notable swimmer competing at this meet is 2021 short course worlds bronze medalist Robert Glinta. He will be racing in just his second meet since the 2022 World Championships and is entered in the 50/100 back, 50 free, and 100 IM.
Three of Romania’s top junior swimmers will also be racing at this meet. One of them is distance star Vlad Stefan Stancu, who is entered in the 400/800/1500 free. This summer, Stancu took European Junior Championship gold in the long course 1500 free, and broke the Romanian records in the 800 and 1500 free. Also competing is Patrick Sebastian Dinu, who dropped from a personal best of 51.45 to a 50.05 in the long course 100 free and swam alongside Popovici on several of the Romanian freestyle relays that medalled at the European and World Junior Championships. He will be swimming the 50/100 free, 50/100 back, 50 breast, and 100 IM.
On the women’s side of the meet, we will get to see action from 50 free 2022 World Junior Champion Bianca Costea. She will be swimming the 50/100 free, as well as the 50 fly.
Very nice interview in the romanian press from David about the present competition and the upcoming world SC championship. The nationals are part of the learning process.. Not that many SC competitions in this part of the world. He will compete in the 200m free tomorrow, 100m IM on saturday and 400m free on sunday for the ones interested.
Does Stancu and/or Dinu also train under Adrian Radulescu as well?
Nope
Until Tokyo Olympics Radulescu coached at Steaua Bucarest and both Popovici and Stancu trained under him. After Tokyo Olympics Radulescu became head coach at Dinamo Bucarest (the most famous club in Romania) and Popovici followed him, while Stancu remained at Steaua Bucarest. Dinu swims for Farul Constantia, another important Romanian club.
No, Dinu trains in a different city with Răzvan Florea, Romania’s only male Olympic medalist in swimming (2004).
And I don’t think Stancu ever trained under Rădulescu either, although he trains at the private club the latter co-founded (NaVi). Vlad’s coach is Iulia Becheru.
14 year-old Aissa Claudia Prisecariu confirms her great talent with a 59.84 in the 100 back using the same strategy (negative splitting the race) seen at the Junior Worlds in Lima.
46.6, back in 23.8.
New PB and NR, a good season-opener indeed.
A 46.6 would have earned him bronze at both Berlin and Indianapolis but Toronto was a bit faster.
Heard special guest Andrew Tate will be in attendance
