Davidson Men and Women Lead after Day 1 of A-10 Champs; GWU DQ’s Medleys

2021 ATLANTIC-10 CHAMPIONSHIPS

The A-10 Championships began this evening in Ohio, as the Davidson women snagged both opening relay wins and the Davidson men and George Washington men split with one each. GWU disqualified both their men’s and women’s 200 medley relays.

On the women’s side, Davidson clocked a 1:40.92, able to just get ahead of Richmond (1:41.14) and Duquesne (1:41.67) as George Washington was DQ’d for an early exchange after initially touching fourth.

Audrey Steen went 25.18 to get Duquesne out to a lead, with Madison Dickert splitting 28.04 on breast to give them over a second lead. Davidson’s Shelby Stanley blew away the field on the fly leg, though, splitting a big 23.48, and Wildcat freshman Martha Tripsa was 22.69 to bring them home. For Richmond, Lauren Medlin was 22.49 to pull them past Duquesne for second.

Davidson and Richmond took things down to the end of the race again in the 800 relay, but Stanley was again the big split, going 1:48.44 on the third leg after Davidson got a 1:49.26 lead-off from Siena Senn. Davidson was 7:19.48 to Richmond’s 7:19.84, as Richmond had a 1:49.18 second leg from Margaret Purcell and a 1:49.90 from Medlin.

Down in sixth was La Salle, who got a field-best 1:47.99 lead-off from Sara Rizzetto. That’s her first time ever under 1:50.

On the men’s side, Davidson banked on a 22.30 lead-off from Kevin Andrews, giving them a strong start as Kilian Quinn brought it home in 19.91 for a total time of 1:29.03 ahead of UMass (1:29.19) and George Mason (1:29.21). GWU was called for a one-handed touch from their butterflier after finishing about two seconds ahead of the field.

In the 800 free relay, GWU was on a tear, beating runners-up George Mason by over seven seconds. Anchoring GWU with a field-best split was Emils Pone, bringing it home in 1:35.53. Marek Osina (1:37.79) and Josh Legge (1:37.97) had strong opening legs for GWU.

23.4 is no joke. I wonder what the fastest ever D3 fly split is…

Davidson is D1. If you don’t believe me, ask Steph Curry.

As a current D3 swimmer, I should really know the difference between Davidson and Denison by now. (and also remember that the season was basically cancelled this year… I was wondering why I havent been competing!)

Emma Waddell split 23.3. for Williams a couple of years ago. Logan Todhunter bet 100 fly was 52.8 so her split was likely right around there

Thanks for answering my boneheaded question.

GW Men DQ’d their 800 and won the 200 medley back when they won in 2017. Will be interesting to see if they can get out of that hole again

GW has arguably the 5-6 best swimmers in the conference. Super deep roster this year, especially in distance events. That 6:31 800 FR was super dominant. I think they’ll win the men’s meet by over 100.

You know, I think you’re right on that. It seems like GW kinda fell a part last year, but are on the rebound this year in a big way looking at the psych sheet. Pone’s my pick for swimmer of the meet
