Full day 1 recap by Natalie Schumann is available here.

For those unfamiliar with the terminology: “Up” means a swimmer who is in the A-final, as those swimmers cannot fall lower than 8th barring a DQ. “Down”is what we’ll call teams in the “B” final, who are bound from 9th-16th places.

Scoring for a 16-place meet: 20-17-16-15-14-13-12-11/9-7-6-5-4-3-2-1, and then doubled for relays.

Michigan is already running away with this meet, though coach Mike Bottom won’t let them become unfocused. They will have a swimmer in every scoring race in tonight’s finals sessions (both A-Finals and B-Finals) and in any of the three swimming events, didn’t have any races with fewer than three in the top 8.

Indiana is really surprising early. Daniel Kanorr is doing exactly what they need him to do in the sprints by making the A-Final. Ohio State still will probably outplace them just a little in diving, but with how the Hoosiers are swimming, they’re edging into the lead for that 2nd-place spot as the Buckeyes couldnt’ capitalize on the 50 free.

Update: with 5 divers into the top 8, Indiana isn’t letting Michigan escape too far with that lead. Indiana has pushed back past Ohio State as the top diving program in this conference, and then some. Mike Bottom’s estimate yesterday of 220 diving points, that seemed outrageous, now is looking more-and-more like a possibility.

Better make that 11 up for IU after diving.

Purdue had a great showing in 50 Free – 4 out of top 16, and all 4 crushed their seed times.

goose eggs for iowa and Michigan st… back to the abyss for iowa, and Michigan st… well, they’ve been there for a while. Purdue making a statement today! More swims than they had last year I think. Looks like Indiana will separate from Ohio State today as well.
