de Deus and de Paula Make Pan Pac Cuts

On the second day of the Brazilian National Championships both Leonardo de Deus and Daynara de Paula put up times that were under the Brazilian Pan Pacific cuts, giving them the opportunity to be on the Brazilian Pan Pacific squad once the selection process has been completed.

de Deus won the men’s 200 backstroke in the Senior session of the meet posting a time of 1:57.85 breaking his own championship record of 1:59.74. He also took the 200 backstroke in the evening’s Open event, but with a much slower time of 1:59.07.

de Deus let it be known that he was not satisfied with his record time as his focus was on breaking Thiago Pereira‘s Brazilian record of 1:57.19.

de Paula also won both the Senior and Open divisions in the women’s 100 butterfly. She took the morning’s event in a time of 59.66 and returned in the second session posting a 58.35 for the win and breaking her own 2009 mark of 58.96.

Nicholas Dos Santos, who set the championship record in the 50 butterfly yesterday posting at time of 22.99, returned to the pool today winning the men’s 100 butterfly in the Open event recording a time of 53.06.

After returning from injury Bruno Fratus has looked to be in great form recording a split of 47.98 in the 4 x 100 freestyle on the first day and followed that up with a 21.19 split in today’s 4 x 50 freestyle relay.

Gracielle Hermann also had an impressive performance in the women’s 4 x 50 freestyle relay leading off in a time of 25.05, only seven one-hundredths of a second off Flavia Delaroli’s 2009 Brazilian record of 24.98.

Many swimmers at the meet have dealing with illness due to unusually hot weather in the south of Brazil.
